Um, Doom 4 is old now... DOOM is coming out...

Recommended Posts

Doom 1993
Doom II 1994
Final Doom (Doom III) 1996
Doom 64 (Doom IV) 1997
Doom 3 (Doom V) 2004
Doom [4] (Doom VI) Tentatively 2016

This is what I get out of it all.

I hate it when they just call it "Doom" as if it was the original Doom. It makes everything so complicated and probably misleading.

I can understand that they don't want to call it "Doom Number 4", but why not calling it "Doom: Subtitle"?

I prefer short names myself, rather than the main name followed by some filler description that ultimately means nothing. I wish they still called it "Doom 4", because I like when works are numbered. It's like a bestselling book or movie cycle that keeps growing! Otherwise what's going to happen when they want to come up with yet another Doom?

Tell me about it; it's a goddamn nightmare on the wiki. The article is currently named "Doom (2016)" but, you can't go around writing that everywhere so you end up with something like...

...the {{timeline|2016}} [[Doom (2016)|Doom]] reboot...
Trying to come up with wording for it that is not ambiguous, doesn't sound awful, and doesn't repeat the same thing 8000 times is a real chore.

As much as I saw WTNO as a huge improvement over W2009, I still didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did with RTCW.

I think there is no canon in the doom series (even if there are many theories), so the RPG games can take place in the list, if we really want:

Doom 1993
Doom II 1994
Final Doom (Doom III) 1996
Doom 64 (Doom IV) 1997
Doom 3 (Doom V) 2004
Doom RPG (Doom VI) 2005
Doom Resurrection (Doom VII) 2009
Doom II RPG (Doom VIII) 2010
Doom [4] (Doom IX) 2016

Final Doom contains two separate, independent IWADs, so you really have:
Doom 1993
Doom II 1994
Final Doom - TNT: Evilution (Doom III) 1996
Final Doom - The Plutonia Experiment (Doom IV) 1996
Doom 64 (Doom V) 1997
Doom 3 (Doom VI) 2004
Doom RPG (Doom VII) 2005
Doom Resurrection (Doom VIII) 2009
Doom II RPG (Doom IX) 2010
Doom [4] (Doom X) 2016

Feel free to have Plutonia before TNT if you prefer it that way.

Also things like PSX Doom have a slightly different continuity, so maybe they should be counted as well!

We can consider also its spin-off series:

Doom: Heretic
Doom: Heretic 2: Hexen

(I know, they are not spin-off but unrelated titles...)

Unrelated?

with the destruction of the BIG
BADASSES and their minions, the last
of the DEMONS are cleared from this
plane of existence.

those creatures had to come from
somewhere, though, and you have the
sneaky suspicion that the fiery
portal of hell's maw opens onto
their home dimension.

to make sure that more DEMONS
(or even worse things) don't come
through, you'll have to seal hell's
maw from the other side. of course
this means you may get stuck in a
very unfriendly world, but no one
ever said being a SPACE MARINE was easy!

Do you think this text would be out of place in a Doom episode?

Someone should create a "episode ending text generator" for Doom sequels...

And... do you want to start thinking about Quake? (Doom: Quake and its sequels)

Maybe just find a way to connect Doom and Quake to the same universe. Like the hordes of hell were involved in the stroggs or something. They seem similar enough, unholy monsters that have some technical prowess.

There are many theories, and everyone can pull out the story and relationship he/she prefers.

But... on Quake crates there is the stroggos symbol, and in Quake 2 you use a new version of the BFG9000...

If the subtitle transports something that is characteristic for the game's setting or style, then it's not meaningless. Good examples in my opinion are:

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Deus Ex: Invisible War

...or the subtitles of the Elder Scrolls series.

ET:QW was a great objective based multiplayer game, not sure why you would think it was bad.

Just because its a sequel doesn't make it canon.
Look at the X-Men movies; with the latest one that came out, it basically null and voided the original trilogy (or, at least, the third in the original trilogy)

This is what I get out of it all.

Here's how I see the canon.

Classic Series:

The Ultimate DOOM

DOOM II

DOOM 64

Final DOOM

Modern Series:

DOOM 3 (It's a remake, so It doesn't count as canon)

DOOM 2016 (It's a origin story, so It counts as canon)

A Quake game rated "T for teen" is a start...
