I've visited it on occasion, looking to find a person, only to realize it's a "browse a thousand pages one-by-one" thing.

Did you see the options "Advanced Search", "Top 10 Posters", "List Alphabetically" and "List by Date Joined" on the top of Memberlist? Anyway, looking through a large list of somehow-sorted usernames can be useful if you're looking for someone or just observing profile/post-count/date-joined statistics out of interest.
