What is your opinion on Youtube red?

Recommended Posts

I think it's a sign of the internet apocalypse. (dramatized for effect) If for example youtube really put their mind to it and found a way to make it so the site doesn't work or is really annoying for use with adblock, that'd be a nuisance.

I love youtube, but it is pretty much a monopoly, everybody just uses it for everything by default. Other than some gamers livestreaming on twitch etc.

I'd never pay for youtube. There are plenty of alternatives out there where you can upload stuff, dailymotion etc, maybe people would use those more if youtube somehow became annoying about this stuff in the future.

Isn't that a contradiction? You said it's a monopoly but then mentioned competing video sites like Dailymotion. I often search for certain videos (not porn) and, while YouTube deleted them all, I can still find them on sites like Dailymotion. Thanks to Google video search for that.

Youtube Red sounds awful. It's like we're getting back to the pre-internet days where everything has to be paid. Back to video cassette and DVD stores.

I use YouTube for the music. I'll pay them to not have ads. It's got all the bootleg music real music subscription sites don't have with none of the drm. Don't have to download an app.

YouTube is a monopoly even with vemeo and daily motion. They're competition like a 3 year old is to Rambo.

I agree. Slowly but surely the industry is attempting to turn the internet into a store and subscription service (in terms of content) while driving out the litle guys. once there was a time where Google actually got you to everybody his or her site... now its even getting hard to find farmer John his web page about the sunflower in the back of his yard.

Youtube is great but childish in nature, while Vimeo has some of the best free short movies by small directors as an example, so there are Alternatives.

I'm not sure what all videos it affects, but subscribing to Google Music (which fwiw is probably the best music sub service I've used) also gives you ad free views to music on YouTube—probably only does anything to, like, VEVO videos, but I suppose is better than nothing.

Frankly I don't think YouTube Red is the worst idea in the world. Those ads on videos usually are what get content creators their money, not all of it goes to Google. Of course if you like a content creator they usually have a Patreon which is preferable to ads, but still. I'm on the fence about whether $10 is too much or not though. Maybe if I actually used Youtube more I wouldn't mind, but I rarely watch anything on there aside from the random cat video that someone links me. :P

10$ is well worth it for how much I YouTube for view and music. 20$ maybe. Sad to think how YouTube's content catcher finds vido game music but not unofficially uploaded songs.

I'll look into Google music. I haven't subscribed to anything for 3 years.

Jesus Christ, I thought this was all some sort of incredibly early AF gag.

I'd rather pay $10 (or £6.66) to not see constant thumbnails from "Top YouTubers" in the 'what to watch next/recommended' category no matter what the fuck I'm watching. Oh wait, Greasemonkey lets me block/hide dumb shit like that anyway.

Never mind. NEXT.

Agreed. I wish I could block some Youtubers. People that I've unsubscribed from Youtube always tells me when they have new videos. I get tired of Youtubers after about 6 months. Some have shifted from quality videos to podcasts, mailbags and lets plays.

The whole $10 thing has been in the works maybe 6 months since when I first heard about it. They were also thinking about filming their own stuff, but I'm not sure how well that will work.

I said "pretty much", and explained what I meant, as in because youtube is just where the majority of people go by default. Nobody mentions "famous dailymotioners", because that doesn't exist. I'm just saying if there was a time where youtube became annoying, maybe then we'd see more people use these alternative sites to host their vids.

I didn't say "youtube literally has a monopoly", you see. But it's fair to say "pretty much", because of how much they're #1 with no close #2 even in sight.

In weak tribute Steven Colbert, these types of monopolies shall henceforth be referred to as "monalmostopolies". ;p

Isn't there a red tube? YouTube red sounds close enough to be a lawsuit.

The sad thing is is that Youtube Red will probably still disallow porn. :(

I use youtube-dl to watch YouTube videos, ad-free and not to mention they play back at full frame rate. Now if it were in the browser, it would be akin to watching a slide show. Without youtube-dl and mplayer/VLC, YouTube would just be a horrible experience.

Also, users can only tolerate so much anyway. Sites that start of rather ad-free or light on ads that become cluttered with them eventually just cause members to leave. If Google is worried about bandwidth that YouTube wastes, then they should just offer videos at 240p or less.

If YouTube Red is like RedTube, then yeah it'll be porn.

What I really love about this idea of "exclusive content" is that it's only "exclusive" in the same way game content devs cut out of their games to hold ransom as dlc is exclusive. We already have youtube, so there isn't any need for a new paid version with "exclusive" content.

The Financial Times just asked me this very question when I was reading an article on K2 just now. I don't know anything about it, tho, but Cecilie Skog is hot.

Doesn't Google have enough money already? The ads are really becoming too intrusive IMO, but if this increase in ad spam over the last year or so is to promote YouTube Red, that's just plain scumbag behavior.

The cancer that are lets plays pretty much accounts for 95% of views for gaming videos. And most of the people I subbed to who didn't do lets plays now do podcasts and mailbags, which means the chances I am going to watch their content is going to go down a lot.

From my understanding you receive a bunch of Pewdiepie content?

It doesn't make any sense to me. It is if they want to pander to a market segment that does not have any income. I'm talking Children and socially challenged teenagers.

I'm happy I haven't been the only person to notice mailbags, lets plays and podcasts. It is of course easier to shit out content like that. A mailbag takes 5 minutes. Even Let's Plays have editing, some don't.

Its just interesting seeing people with 2 million subscribers and these lesser videos have a few thousand views even months after. Of course views are views. The good excuse is if you don't like it don't watch. I'm jealous I can't do that with my own career, but sadly if there's a problem I'm the one that gets the call.

Pwediepie is like CoD to me. Everyone on the Internet seems to hate him yet he's got the most hits. Go figure. Perhaps those that love one or the other are busy enjoying them rather than posting in forums while Youtubers are making videos about both for fun and profit. I would have never heard of Pew Pew if it weren't for other Youtubers... complaining about him. I suppose that's how you get the side traffic, connecting yourself to the biggest thoroughfare.

I watched a few videos of that guy and i do not even understand how he can get so many views. And to me he ruined Indie games because every indie website now hosts a billion of those crappy badly made "hey-look-at-me-streamer" games.

It are things like this which i do not get about Youtube users. Are those views even real. It would be funny if people would pay to watch that.

The only Pewdipie video I ever saw and thought was pretty funny was a video of him and some other guy fucking around in Gmod while reading an explicit Frozen porno fanfiction.

It's become very hard to find a gameplay video that's just a gameplay video. And not something that starts with a dumb title card and then waste five minutes as the player character sits there doing nothing while some mouth-breather goes "hey guys welcome back to my lets play series blah blah blah gobble gobble".

The term you want to search for is "longplay".

I find the less obnoxious and less loud let's players bearable at the very least.

Cryaotic sounds right up your alley, although he tends to do indie or freeware titles.

The Only Narrated Let's Play I ever enjoyed was the Proteus Diakatana let's play. That's a walkthrough that benefited from someone (Or some guys) talking over everything. It was a pretty good riff, imo.
