Crix Posted June 12, 2002 Will Doom3 benefit from the Clawhammer's 64 bit capability. I mean to say, will the Doom code need to be written in a certain way to make use of the new chip architecture or is that unnecessary? I'm gonna hold out for a ~2.5Ghz x86-64 Clawhammer with .13micron die. I'd like the .09 but that's second half 2003. May be too pricey still. 0 Share this post Link to post
Mastaba Posted June 12, 2002 Carmack has stated there is not likely to be a 64 bit executable for DOOM III, as it would generally have worse performance than the 32 bit executable. Source: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/20918 0 Share this post Link to post

Mastaba Posted June 12, 2002 Well, isn't lower performance tantamount to worse performance? 0 Share this post Link to post
Lord FlatHead Posted June 12, 2002 Well yes, but saying worse implies that the 32 bit exe was already bad. Nevermind. 0 Share this post Link to post
Crix Posted June 12, 2002 huh, that's interesting. I wonder if a 16 bit executable would run doom faster. Then again, I don't know much about how this stuff works. 0 Share this post Link to post

Psyonisis Posted June 14, 2002 Isn't it weird that doom legacy uses doom3.wad, AND Legacy was the name of the video that was released?! for doom 3?! 0 Share this post Link to post

Thats what DOS/4GW (you see the splash screen for it when you start up doom) does. 0 Share this post Link to post
