Mailbag

A new Mailbag... it's a government conspiracy, I bet.

  • Ethh has created a Doom shamanism page. Here is what scientists discovered after studying scrolls left behind in demon lairs and interviewing captured demons... or so Ethh wants us to belief. Now mankind finally has the opportunity to ask a Lost Soul that burning question: "Do you miss your Pain Elemental?" Funny, in a geeky way :)
  • Andy Olivera has updated his site with talk about a new review and demos.
  • The REoL Tough site has updated with a new Flash 4.0 powered layout. "All new Flash menus will guide you through the more simplistic layout people have been wanting!", according to REoL himself. Netscape users beware: it crashes your browser.

Heh, I can't believe people are still using Netscape, they've had like 3 years now to switch to IE and have a functional browser at their service. Probably the same people still on Win 3.11 I would imagine.

The IS an issue with Flash 4.0 and Netscape in general. :( Pretty much everyone who told me Flash crashes their system uses Netscape. As for the menu, it was repaired. It appears, except the "Zipography" button, had a flag set incorrectly, and the "Main" one was just plain messed up. I think they all SHOULD work now.

God damn it! I fixed the buttons JUST LIKE the Zipography one, EXACTLY, and STILL the Main one is f'd up, and the others do squat! I'm hoping the AOL servers just are behind in figuring out the fixed (?) versions of the menus are running. If they are indeed still dead, there's a few places and resources I can go to see why....

Hmm. The REoL blurb brings this to mind: "We'll send the stormtroopers to escort you to the voting booth!" And IE annoys me too much to use as a browser; it's almost enough to make a person switch to Lynx. As to Ethh's page, I thought the interviews were quite funny, especially the LS's linear thinking :)

I tested the menus, and they BOTH work (big and small Flash ones). I know the non-flash ones work. Navigational problems are GONE now. It seems I put all the tags and other info IN THE WRONG PLACES, so the important fields to make them work were left blank. OOPS! :) As for crashes, Flash doesn't work with everyone, and that does suck, like my machine at work is a good example.

Why use flashand allof that fancy stuff to begin with? HTML has and always will work fine. BTW: Does anyone know if the RORdoom web site once again has plain HTML links on it's menus? I don't have M$$$'s Active X or whatever it requires, and I am not going to do a 1+ meg download (my modem's a dinosaur on the machine I'm using) just to be able to navigate a web page.

Can't do frames or tables worth a damn, plus want graphics and sound to come to the end user at a fairly quick rate? That's why FLASH is getting popular, other than making sick cartoons (newgrounds.com). A lot of big sites (and mine) are using Flash, to deliver what HTML simply can't do. (Even Java for that matter.) Plus, it's great to do a total redesign of a web site without touching any HTML whatsoever. It's all personal preferences. If HTML, or JAVA is enough for you, then great! Since I'm no HTML whiz (I have admited that MANY a times), Flash really helps get the results I want, without the fancy-schmancy HTML coding.

Yeah, geocities sucks, cause it NEVER responds when I hit a link to one of its pages.

Hmm... Netscape's mail client isn't suceptable to those e-mail 'viruses' unless you try to open them up yourself, yet Outlook doesn't even think twice about opening them right up without asking. Methinks I'm sticking with Netscape.

As for web design, Clean HTML is definitely the way to go. Just because you have all the special bells and whistles doesn't make your site design look any better. I built a personal web page recently, (http://twicerisen.8m.com) it looks pretty good, and the only thing you have to get for optimum viewing is a font. Which is optional - it reads perfectly without it. The site is built for any browser, on any connection. Any way you look at it the (unfortunately required) ads are the longest thing to load by far.

You don't even need to know any HTML anymore. There are lots of free builders (Netscape Composer, for one) that can do everything you'll need. Admittedly the code is a bit sloppy, but it works.

Yes... do not learn HTML... it is the unwillingness of most people to learn a simple parsing language which allows me to charge exorbitant amounts for constructing webpages :P

I won't argue that good HTML works, but Flash helps those of us who AREN'T good at it, besides, all the sounds and pics download WAY faster! (Mini Flash menu is less than 10KB, where just the logo all alone in HTML would be about 24KB!) Both have their advantages.

Which page are you talking about? You really do need the font for maximum effect when viewing my page, (It's a particularly definitive font,) but the point is it's not required. Besides, I'd rather not wait for a million images to load while I wait for the content, which is all I really care about anyway.
I haven't even been to Reol's page b/c I'm not going to install flash or anything on this computer just to see it. See, that's one visitor lost because of the design. I can't even visit the page to see if the flash items outweigh the benefits of clean HTML.
And if you were talking about my page, it's just a personal page anyway. It wasn't written to please everyone.

Now I can't go to REoL Tough... gee. I loved that page. The crappy design, the totally unplayble levels. Wow. So sad. *sniff*

You don't know HTML... fine Try an editor. Visual Page, Front Page, Page Deluxe, Page Mill, HoTMetaL, Composer. These all work beautifully, no code required. At all. You can even do tables and frames. I infintely prefer to do my site (http://www.electricstoat.com/rich/) in TextPad4, but that's me. I can send you a CD with Symantec Visual Page if you can't afford it. Come on! Spare us modem users from your flash covered crap.

You use Textpad, too? I never quite get over how much cool stuff that thing does. It's my primary ACS writer, HTML editor, Hex editor, Text editor, and, well... just about anything else!

If you visit the DeatH Site, but don't have Flash, you can still navigate with the Non-Flash menus, you just have a black (or gray) viod where the Flash is, that's all.

REol... FLASH SUCKS! You need to use something that EVERYBODY can use. It's the basic fundamental of web design.
