A bunch of new old news posts

Recommended Posts

I was bored and converted a cache of 900ish news posts, and associated comment threads, from December 1999 to July 2000.

They start at approximately https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/100/ (for the moment) and continue onward, well, to the end.

csDoom drama: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/76490-csdoom-problems/
Doom 3 announced, I think: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/76340-doom-3-announced/
Doom Nation dies: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/76302-doomnation-dead/
The beginning of the end: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/76247-forum-time/
Possibly the earliest /newstuff Chronicles ancestor: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1443611
Quake source released: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/75655-quake-source-released/
The now oldest post: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/75605-doom-nation-stuff/

Possibly, but I want to do the stuff with comment threads first, since that's more interesting.

Watch out, I already did some of those really really really old posts quite some time ago manually, kinda forgot about it though.

What on Earth is a Lost Soul?

Assuming these posts are from the old forum database, they're probably posters whose names aren't in the Member List for one reason or another. Not sure if Cyb belongs in that group, though I might be wrong.

It's weird to see the shift in culture over time. I've browsed the "other ancient DW forums" a few times, I'm assuming that's where this all comes from. Funny thing to note, people have always been chanting about the death of Doom and it still hasn't happened. I don't think it will until the death of humanity itself.

No, this is from a stash of old news posts and comments at http://www.doomworld.com/comments/9.shtml and so forth. There's another directory with a bunch more posts / comments I will look at next, and THEN there's the first forums...

I thought all the bbhacks posts got imported into vBulletin when it was first installed?

Interesting! What was the result of Doom Millennium? It seemed very ambitious (for it's time) resource wise.

They declared that they'd release "before Doom 3" - then Doom 3 came out, and the project was never heard from again.

Not BBHacks, Blazeboard or whatever it was called.

What's to know? They're imported posts by people without linked forum accounts.

Doomworld's news section nowadays is integrated into the forums - ie. every news item is actually a forum thread and you can click through to comment on the news.

It wasn't always this way. Originally Doomworld was just news updates, there were no forums or comments at all (see the "really really old" news link I posted above). Then the forums were added, and the ability to comment on news was added, but these were entirely separate things.

To comment on a news item you just clicked through and filled in a form, and your comment would appear on the page. It wasn't connected to the forums and I don't think there was even any ability to register names, so you could just post a comment pretending to be anyone. Some of the people who commented didn't leave names, or didn't have forum accounts, or used different names to the names for their forum accounts. Hence the "Lost Soul" users.

EDIT: You could create accounts. See here for an example of what the comment pages looked like. But the "news story" accounts were not the same as the forums accounts.

"If id software is going ot mke d2k, well im pretty sure itll be utter shit, they will produce some gfx eye candy overladen "thing" that wont accept more than 5 monsters on screen symultaneously and that slows down to the unplayable as soon as the play area gets slightly big... itll be like quake 1 and quake 2 : nothing in common it will be called doom but it wont BE doom"

I found this post hilarious in the Doom 3 reveal thread

Damn, can't beleive it was nearly 16 years ago since DOOM 3 was announced. graduated high school that same month that year, and I remember being so stoked and pumped, lost sleep over it. Then it was a rough time shortly thereafter when 3dfx went belly up, lol.

What's up with the user who registered in 1975?

Julian? I'm guessing he changed it himself since that's probably his birthdate :P

OK, I added something like 1100 more news stories with comments, spanning from to August 2000 to November 2000, and then from June 2001 to March 2002. The gap in there is when I deleted a whole bunch of stuff accidentally back in the day WHOOPS.

Can't really be bothered to go through it all, but some stuff I found off the top of my head:

The Bush / Gore election: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/76880-bush-bushwhacks-neck-in-neck-with-gore/
9/11 happened: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/77279-dwbs/ https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/77280-potd/
Alien Vendetta released: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/77562-alien-vendetta-released/

These are fun to read, thanks for unearthing them.

The AV release thread was amusing; half of it is us getting our asses kicked over that retarded installation app we attached to it last minute. Brilliant decision :)

Oh hey, I just realised the old comments had subject lines as well as bodies. Some of the comments just say "NT" because the author wrote their comment in the subject line.

You might want to import the subject line in as well.

You just leapt from 160 posts to 231, amazing!!

I considered it but decided it wasn't worth the effort (how do I show them? Do I filter out ones that are clearly pointless? How do I determine such a thing?). If I change my mind I can always just update them.

Understood. It's just kind of weird in some cases, like the Alien Vendetta thread for example opens with "You're a fucking idiot" that makes no sense without the subject line attached.

I noticed that but then saw the poster and just assumed it was intended.
