Need help with onboard VIA sound...

I recently had to change my mother board and got a cheap ABIT VA6
with a VIA Appollo Pro 133 chipset and onboard sound.
Ok, after loading the drivers off the enclosed disc, I find I have no legacy sound support for old midi type DOS games.
I get all kinds of errors and the games (Doom & Doom 2, DXball...)crash now because of the lack of sound support. What am I to do, I can play all other games with no problem?

Can you disable the onboard sound? If you can, just buy a cheap
16 bit soundcard. You should be able to pick one up for next to
nothing.
