For a taste of the new DooM....

.... try the original 4 episodes of DooM I under the Quake II engine. Terry J. Delaney has done a spectacular job of converting the maps and textures of DooM I for Quake II. Now you get beautiful lighting, rugged terrain outdoors, deep and translucent water, and other features that enhance the DooM experience. The files for all 4 episodes are available at:

I would like to agree, but they ain't good at all. They are poorly ported and the Q2 enemies make it suck, IMO.
