If we created everything from scratch -- engine, graphics, sound, music, etc. there'd obviously be no restrictions on our profits. (However, I doubt that we collectively have the talent or the time to create a game that will be profitable.) Alternatively, we could request a license from one of the gaming companies to modify their engine, graphics, etc. (Just like Raven did with Heretic, Hexen, Hexen II.) In that case we'd have to pay a license fee and probably royalties.

Prower tried that once, with just a megawad as the idea. I think 2 or 3 levels got made in 9 months, and haven't heard of it since.
