It was fixed. If the general public would've REALLY voted, the No1 spot would have been given to Half-Life. :P

Bleh.

doom would have had my vote, but thats because halflife hasn't influenced much at all. Its still a godlike game though.

It wasn't a vote. PC Zone is a brilliant games mag in the UK, i've been reading it since issue #1...anyway, the feature is actually part of a regular series they do. Every issue they get a group of six or seven reviewers together and do a "supertest", comparing the best games in a certain genre (say role-players, or adventure games, or whatever) and pick the best. Since this month was their 100th issue they did it a little differently and picked the most influential game of all time. NOTE THE WORDING, most influential, not best - Half-Life can't really qualify, simply because it's such a recent game there's hardly been time for anything to be influenced by it. (You could argue it's hardly revolutionary anyway, it basically takes RPG elements into an FPS game). The field therefore rather obviously consisted of pretty old games - Dune 2 was in there, so was Ultima Online, The Secret Of Monkey Island, seminal games like that. Doom won because it was held to be the single largest influence on the creation of the FPS genre - Dune 2 was in a similar position for RTS games, but they argued that FPS is likely to have a future than RTS, and gave the award to Doom. So a) it wasn't a free choice and b) it wasn't a publically voted thing. (Off-topic, the issue also had an exclusive review of the gold code for Black & White, which apparently is fucking awesome...scored 95%, which is incredibly high for PCZ.)
