What editor are you using? Some editors, specifically the newer ones (such as the one I use, DeeP '97) have the ability to merge sectors built in.

I know there is a program available somewhere that lets you merge identical sidedefs, perhaps it can also do it with sectors as well, I dunno.

I'm pretty sure WadAuthor can do it easily, though I haven't touched it in over 3 years. I believe I used to do it without even thinking about it.

But remember, you have to have a new sector whenever you need to change the ceiling height or texture, floor height or texture, brightness level or special sector characteristics.

I use DeepSea, i can easily split and join sectors but i'm stumped as to how map8 of Gothic2 was done (mentioned on the 10 sectors contest page)

In Wad Author, you can merge sectors by dragging one on top of another. Otherwise, you'd probably have to edit the lines sector tags to reference the correct sector.

To make GothicDM2 style sectors, you just make one sector, and create another area with the same linedefs. For example, I do this a lot myself in the QDOOM maps and other projects I've done (New Breed and ROKS). I use DOOM Cad, create a sector, select that sector, then "edit the current sectors lindefs". Then you can create a single sector that's broken up anywhere.

It's good because if you have a single feature that you want to have the same heights and textures, you make one sector and use this method to spread it all over. You don't have to re-edit the sector attributes over and over to be the same, only the linedefs have to be dressed with the textures you want.

Holy crap! I just looked at the wad myself. All that in 17 sectors. I'm impressed!

By the way, how do you join sectors in DeePsea?
