Proper Lighting

Hey all, this is my first post here so go easy on me..

I just have one simple question to ask: is there any known tutorial or help page that shows a person how to create proper lighting effects? Basically what I mean is that I know how to create whatever structures etc. that I want in a level, but I am clueless when it comes to lighting. I'd like to know where/how to put in basic shadows, bright spots around lamps, etc.

Any help, of course, is greatly appreciated!
