'New' Source Port Model - Reactions?

Recommended Posts

Guest DW-Steve

I've been debating putting the comatose PrjDoom under a new model . Basically, anyone would be able to contribute source, as long as it lives up to my (hah) standards. It would then be integrated, and every once in awhile, a new source base would be rlelased to which people could make their changes and send them in. I know that OGRE used a similar approach, and it didn't even get off the ground, but I believe that such an approach can be made to work if I don't stop to ask everyone's opinion before I change any lines of code. What is everyone's reactions to this?

What do you expect people to contribute? If someone's a half-decent coder interested in working with the Doom source they've probably done so already...

Most of the Linux ports at least already use this model;
about half the features I've added to LxDoom were contributions
from users. OTOH it does require you have a user base to start
with, containing some coders.

Man, I wish I knew some coding past QBasic. I must be missing out on a lot.
