Better monsters

To make the monsters REALLY scary, give them PERSONALITY. that would be so damn great. Some monsters would have no hostile feelings for you before you get hostile on them or their friends. For example, the arch-vile would run around dancing, while chanting something unreadable wich when you reverese the sound says something vierd about carmack =) He would read books, go around worshipping his dark gods etc when idling.
The baron could try to look you straight in your eyes with an evil 'im gonna show you pain' look, laughing viciously when you try to shoot him with a pistol, getting angry at you etc.
The zombiemen would act totally crazy. Just shooting wildly, laughing, talking about the strangest things.
The mancubs would generally be agressive, barking at you and shooting until you send a shell into their fat-ass guts, then they would get scared and look sad.
The Deamons would eat anything they see unless you are a threat to them. You can see on them that they just want to eat you, acting hungry and shit.

Woop, the monsters have personality. You feel like they're really monsters and not just boxes that move and shot. would be GREAT
I'm gonna leave it to the rest of ya to come up with some ideas =)

Heh,that's a nice idea. And liked the one about the zombiemen too much. It's like they are damned and their souls suffer and stuff. And like they are in a deep painful sleep. wow cool.
About the demons eating when idle.. that's hard to be done. There should be pieces missing from the unfortunate foes when demons eat them slowly. That's a bit difficult-well if you want to make it look realistic that is. Different monster behaviours over different situations would make the game be unique enough. And since the enemies of now's action games are too stupid to look real( just running for you no matter what,like they want to get close to you real bad) that would be the great difference. And I don't know for you guys, but I can't wait to play a game different than all the others.

Yes! very good.
But not all monsters (of the same kind) should have personality. An example is that some zombies have been posted on guard duty and will attack any that try to pass, and then have some other zombies on assassin duty - they will attack you on sight and fight to the bitter end. And all of the above zombies would be of the same kind if need be (AI settings like warcraft 2 had?). Some monsters should also have settings to make them specificially tougher than their comrades (like an imp that has had it's health boosted 4x to be a challenge to the player without having to create another creature entirely).

And most intelligent monsters should respond to seeing a firefight, maybe attracted to it if the sound doesn't alert them.

zombies guarding an area and one that's supposed to hunt you down.... They both have the same personality. They're both fucking crazy. What they exactly 'do' doesn't matter really. It's how their behavior is... hard to explain...

The zombies guarding an area would be pretty lathargic - wouldn't move around or rant much, but fight like hell if you try to go past them. Zombies that try to hunt you down and kill you would run and shoot relentlessly, they would scream their heads off and probably draw attention to the area from other monsters (bigass baron opens the door to see what the commotion is about, only to find you!).
Their idle behavior would change for their different duties.

Well, it wouldn't be too hard if the deamon took a good solid bite of the corpse, flung it into the air, and swallowed the whole damn thing. Could be funny on cyberdeamons too :-P
