A very first wad I've ever made

Recommended Posts

I managed to "dig up" the personal treasure from the old korean doom community; It's a very first wad I've ever made right after I learned how to create a level with DeepSea level editor. This wad was release to the public(korean doom community, for more precisely) in Feb 19. 2006 with six singleplay levels. I thought I lost this one, but thankfully the site is still survived after nearly 10 years.

As I mentioned above, it contains six levels with limit-removing compatibility. But because of frequency issue of custom sound effect, it is recommend to use ZDoom to run this one.

And because I was too immature to design the doom levels back in 2006, Here are several flaws you need to know, in case you try this wad:

- Every levels, except the first one and the last one(MAP06), don't support the pistol start. That's right, you must start from the MAP01 in order to beat the wad in conventional way. To make it even worse, there are no difficulty settings.

- These levels are made with shareware version of DeepSea, which means there's strict limitation to every levels; less than 800 linedefs + less than 1200 sidedefs.

- Way too linear circulation + boring monster placements + awkward secret design + anything you can imagine for the very first wad

Out of curiosity: does the Korean community have some sort of site or forum?

They used to have some community sites with some active users back in early 2000s, but all of them, except one, are now closed because of inactivity, low popularity of doom in here, etc. For the only survived one from that era, you must have an account of daum.net which requires korean social security number. And that site is pretty much inactive considering that there are only 11 threads in this year. The address is http://cafe.daum.net/doom

Still, there's also one community site that only 5 years old, and it's pretty much active; more than 500 threads in this year. But this site also requires an account of naver.com(and as you guessed it, you need a korean social number to join). Majority of active members are focusing on gameplay mod with ZDoom compatible, while I'm the only one who makes levels with limit-removing. Here's an address of the site: http://cafe.naver.com/doomguy

Well, lots of flat combat in hallways and rooms, but the high monster density made this somehow ok, I guess. The first levels were better. On the last I pressed all the switches to wake up all the monsters and abusing the infighting but I wasn't expecting that swarm of archviles, I gave up. Might as well retry later :P

Trust me, that arch-vile swarm is nearly impossible to beat if you spent all of plasma cells during the previous battles. I'll be honest, I always run to the exit whenever I pressed that button(yes, that's the switch for the exit door, technically).

Good for a first wad. Even though monster/item placement is crude, the game was mostly entertaining and flowed well (only the last map didn't). Fine sense for aesthetic, too. You've certainly improved your design skill a lot over the years, so, congrats! :)

Same as what Sci said - Great for an early wad, and your stuff since is even better. Keep up the fine work!

EDIT: Tried translating some of those links, couldn't do it! Cant help but wonder what those threads are all about.

Right, I must admit that the design of last map wasn't executed very well. I guess I couldn't resist to the temptation that placing a thousand imps within a single map. Thanks for the comment :)

Trust me. Most of translating systems, including Google Translate, can't translate korean to english perfectly. Any koreans will find out that it was translated not by person, but by Google Translate since it's obviously too awkward. For instance, 개인공략도감 from cafe.naver.com/doomguy is translated as "Private targeting Book" by Google Translate, while the correct translation is "Personal walkthrough compilation"

Why is a Korean SSN needed? I mean for comparison, http://iddqd.ru didn't ask me for anything in relation to Russian SSN/etc when I made a forum account.

For some reason, I love when people fit the techno pillar with the tek textures.

For a first wad, this looks very nice indeed.

The majority of korean communities were founded with the forum hosting service that provided by local web portal sites, such as Naver, Daum, etc. And unlike other forum sites that you might only need an e-mail address to join, you need a valid web portal account which needs a social number, in order to join the forum sites that hosted by web portal.
