FWIW some cool guy decided to spend his time today downvoting InstaDoom about 50 times in a row using a long list of proxy IPs, which is just an example of the good times that would be had if there was some sort of actual official Cacoward voting system.

I basically agree with Rottking, the public voting is dumb imo, but i could probably make the cacoward commision bigger, (there are now like 5 ppl only?) i can imagine some of players even from competitive environment good for cacoward commision.

Some history for the kids: During the first awards in 2004, we tried to do voting; I asked manc to make a simple voting website and we gave the address out to selected members of the community. As you have already guessed, people didn't vote and I ended up choosing everything myself. We're damn lucky to have community members producing articles of this quality on a volunteer basis. Anyone is free to go start their own awards that features more transparency. That said...

I'm still waiting for this year's ZSpectre awards...

I'm happy with the current system. But if you wanted to go half way you could include the "peoples choice awards" which can be from 1 to 3 awards, or whatever.

I'm amazed at the amount of amazing high quality releases this year. I love the Cacowards because I always miss something with how busy I am. There are some great wads that end up under the radar and I believe these guys do a great job at finding them. Looks like I have quite a few things to add to my "To Play" list!

I think Erkatanne is Monti's worst mapset and is full of all the problems I have with his other works but with the elements he does well toned down and removed due to trying to be "TWID" or whatever. However, I like that it got an award. KMX stuck to his guns and gave it to something HE liked. That's what awards should be. If you need awards to form your opinion or validate it, well then you should probably stop playing Doom and go do something else with your life, like watching grass grow at a competitive level.

This is actually a really nice idea.
Have a small little section where people submit the WADs that they enjoyed, and then they get their own little mention.
Maybe you could slap on Captcha, or something else of that caliber to deter any people trying to spam their choices.

Yeah, this bears repeating. In any given community setting it's not difficult to manufacture a grim Orwellian narrative anywhere and everywhere the concepts of popularity and competition (real or perceived) meet, but wholly apart from the issue of what gets put in the (unranked!) top 10 versus the sidebar or whatever, I reckon you'd have to be pretty damned obtuse not to see that the content quality of the most recent 2-3 Cacowards pages has been vastly improved from what it was just a few years before, when it was entrusted to a fellow rather unabashedly phoning it in. And if you look at the 'Wards not as reality TV but as a quick primer for cool/noteworthy PWADs and such that came out in a given year, I reckon content quality is the most important thing, since we're all capable of forming our own opinions about things once we actually play them, right?

Yeah, I loved Kmx's reasons for giving it the award. It made sense, whether or not it appealed to you personally. Kind of like when an artsy film that people didn't watch and that just isn't up your alley gets a big award for its artsiness.

I feel exactly like this about Sunlust - and agree that it's alright. Erkattäññe was the genuinely great and sympathetic wad for me personally, though.

Just started Erkattäññe. Enjoying it so far. It's ugly and full of low-tier opposition -- in contrast to my usual preferences -- yet it's still fun so it's worth studying!

Best wad with modern, complex architecture using new features such as slopes and 3D floors, but without going overboard with superfluous scripting or custom monsters and therefore keeping close to the original Doom gameplay instead of turning it into a different game

Yeah I was just moving into a new apartment and on the run up to my wedding, so I had completely forgot what day it was as well. Luckily, I get bored at work and checked Doomworld, so I managed to see all this!
