Tracks or pieces you'd want adapted into Doom MIDIs

Recommended Posts

Don't embed videos in this thread. It's kind of unnecessary, and it just bogs down page loading times.

1) Ravel's String Quartet in F Major, 2nd movement -- this would be absolutely sick. A decent MIDI of this is probably already out there, actually, but preserving the dynamics of a good live performance would be important. Would fit some Sunlust levels well, I think. Reminds me somewhat of the icy tyson level from So69's backing track.

2) Lots of Susanne Sundfor's stuff, but particularly "White Foxes" (the vocal melody wouldn't be reproduced with CHOIR AAHHS or VOICE OOHS or whatever) and "The Silicone Veil" (the vox, or a simplified version of them, would be rendered somehow, maybe with a synth lead).

3) I really want to use Olof Arnald's "Patience" in a level, and I might get around to adapting it myself. The main vocal line is too distracting of course, but the backing track and the chorus vox would work well.

Anyway, with the MIDI format you lose a lot of tonal nuance and stuff, so the best tracks to adapt, imo, are those that derive their strength from melodic and harmonic and rhythmic quality -- so out goes a lot of the more ambient and electronic and vocal-driven stuff I like, and in goes more of the classical stuff and quirky folksky stuff.

This thread is a good idea, particularly because there's a change a MIDI composer will reproduce something posted herein on a whim. Please put effort into submissions and explain what changes you'd make and/or what types of levels your tracks would fit -- this isn't intended as a simple "songs I like" thread.

I once saw one of NitroActive's "reviews" of a troll WAD that featured a MIDI version of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song." It was awesome but I have no idea which video it was and I'm not willing to go through his "reviews" to find it again. If anybody knows where it was from or where to get it please let me know. I agree some songs translate really well into MIDI Doom form and that was one of them.

End of Days by Delta Heavy stands out to me. I have this feeling far too often when I play games, "this music would be nice as a Doom midi"

1. "Prisonsex" by Tool - I've been mapping while listening to this song a lot lately and ended up pulling a heap of inspiration from the video in one of my latest maps, so it's kinda been on my brain lately. I just want one that doesn't try to emulate the bloody vocals!

2. "March of the Fire Ants" by Mastodon - A similar case to the previous one: my map for NOVA II was made while listening to this repeatedly for about 5 hours and I still regret not being able to find a MIDI.

3. "Latter Days" by Danny Baranowsky - An excellent piece of music from The Binding of Isaac that I badly want to use in a map. It's sad how few Isaac MIDIs there are out there.

Into the Coven by Mercyful Fate (without the King Diamond vocals)

Outlaw Torn (S&M) by Metallica without a totally f*cked up solo and with better volume level consistency.

Crossfire/prologue+deadly string suite/dynamite by The Scorpions with Berliner Philharmonika orchestra, even though the first 5 minutes wouldn't be quite right.

Any Joe Satriani song. For now, let's just say Andalusia would be f*cking epic to kill demons to.

I've really wanted NIN's Last, or The Wretched in MIDI for a while, but it would be really tricky to make it sound good.

I always wanted the zerg background music from starcraft in midi form. Its got so many weird sounds that don't sound far off from midi instruments I've heard in some doom music tracks. I think it would be a cool experiment to map midi adaptation to it.

True, the starcraft games did have some cool music.

So did the warcrafts... especially the orc music. Anybody remember the little dancing ogre on the WC2 music player on blizzards website like 10 years ago?

I should look up and see if the old NES Battle of Olympus and Total Recall midis are online, those games had some cool music as well.

Constantinople by the Residents for a Turkish themed map I've been wanting to make.

Green day's 2012 trilogy.

They could have cut the fat and made a decent single disk album. They tried making the White album and failed.

One song that comes to mind is this remix of the Druuge theme from "Star Control II". Even without all the screams and other sound effects, the rest sounds quite Doom-like. Other examples are the Ilwrath theme remix, which would be fitting for eerie or overtly "weird" levels, and the metal-sounding Thraddash remix.

From Serious Sam II: this tune sounds almost like something Bobby Prince could compose.

Not sure how feasible it would be, but I think the basic melodies of Dr. Steel's "Spaceboy" or "Land of the Lost" would make really good, chilling tunes.

But the soundtrack is already made up of MIDI files.

Me? I'd be curious about the following songs as well, even though they don't have the "typical" Doom feeling (but then, neither does some of e.g. Jimmy's best works):
Odjbox - Laquada
Homestuck - Tall, Dark and Loathsome
Homestuck - Scratch
Homestuck - Carapacian Dominion (in a simplified version, with just the basic melody; and probably skipping the entire intro up to 1:49)

True. I think some avant-prog works great as a MIDI. It's the closest you can get of musical weirdness using only notes and rhythm. The yakfak music is a good example, or the track on shrooms.wad (ELP - Tarkus).

I actually wanted to see them used in a Doom wad. But thanks for sharing links to some I didn't have (Mirai Nikki).

@Rush Immigrant Song, idk if it's the same midi you were talking about, maybe it's a different version.

Aww hell yeah, thank you very much gaspe. This is the exact one. It's so cheesy but so awesome at the same time lol.
