FireFish Posted December 19, 2015 The Japanese Wikipedia page explaining FPS games and their history mentions Freedom twice : Mention 1 ; Screenshot of "DOOM" (from "FreeDoom"), which was made in the early 1990s by means of FPS technology. Image processing such as shadows in the texture mapping blind is burned in advance in the texture. only vertical and horizontal Polygons planes. The height of the line-of-sight (camera) is fixed in one direction. horizontal direction only. Attacks such as shooting will hit treats if match direction (x-axis). Although monsters, etc. appear in a three-dimensional object at first glance, actually a billboard. Mention 1 ;Game image of free software "Free Doom" that has been fabricated using the initial DOOM engine. one needs Japansese Fonts like Adobe-han or light weight equivalents on Linux based systems, on Windows one needs support for Japanese characters. Or... just feed the page to google translate like i partially did. Your browser isn't broken. ;) https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%91%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BD%E3%83%B3%E3%83%BB%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%83%86%E3%82%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B2%E3%83%BC%E3%83%A0 It seems freedom is more known than one would initially think. 0 Share this post Link to post
Da Werecat Posted December 19, 2015 Image processing such as shadows in the texture mapping blind is burned in advance in the texture. Hahaha, looks like special effects such as normal mapping are so being taken for granted today that their absence needs to be thoroughly explained. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 19, 2015 They probably used Freedoom because it makes the licensing issue less hairy for screenshots. Don't need to justify that it's fair use if the content is free. 0 Share this post Link to post
FireFish Posted December 19, 2015 That might be so. They also used Open-arena instead of quake 3. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sergeant_Mark_IV Posted December 19, 2015 Heh, same pic is used in the brazilian wikipedia. https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom 0 Share this post Link to post
RestlessRodent Posted December 19, 2015 Wikipedia is really only super Nazi on the English Wikipedia for the most part, if something does not have a credible source (i.e. a news outlet) then it may as well not exist. There is a Freedoom article though https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedoom. Early on though there was a edit war between it being a Doom WAD and a band from NJ. However, being from very near by I have never heard of the band named Freedoom nor from when I was in school either. They only had a freewebs site though which is very unprofessional. Hopefully they do not hold a grudge against Freedoom for losing the edit war. 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted December 21, 2015 Japanese wiki is very serious about screenshots and other images, more serious than the English one. There are pretty much no pictures in articles about commercial games or anime or films. No posters even, just text. 0 Share this post Link to post

Heh, I actually like that about the english Wikipedia. Everything has a source, and if it doesn't it has a "citation needed". So you know it's not just a claim by a random internet person. I always notice it in the Doomwiki, you could plaster the articles with "citation needed". And don't think the english Wikipedia is bad. In the german one there are people that are commonly called "Löschnazis" ("deletion nazis"), because many articles just get deleted when some admin doesn't deem the topic worthy (i.e. something as simply as when they don't care about it). 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 21, 2015 The English Wikipedia has had its fair share of deletionist controversies. 0 Share this post Link to post
FireFish Posted December 22, 2015 People want Wikipedia to be as correct as the normally expensive printed written encyclopedia one would buy in book stores, or loan from a library... which explains why they want a valid reference. I remember a time (years ago) in which Wikipedia was being laughed with as a pathetic website filled with incorrect data, lies, racism, edit wars, the hobby of asocial basement nerds, and as being for and by people with mental issues... Now that they are getting rid of that reputation, and gained a global following, they also gained the attention of the law... the trademark and copyright laws. Which partially or fully differ from country to country. 0 Share this post Link to post
Quasar Posted December 22, 2015 If you speak Japanese, would you mind getting in touch with the guys who run http://www8.atwiki.jp/doom2k/pages/1.html ? I tried sending them a message but they either A. couldn't understand enough of what I said or B. took offense to something I said the wrong way. I was proposing that we exchange links/become affiliates and that they switch over to linking to us instead of to that other site if you know what I mean. EDIT: that is, on behalf of DoomWiki.org 0 Share this post Link to post
