How about a top ten worst FPS?

Recommended Posts

In no order and what I've suffered from personal experience:

1. Operation Body Count (Absolute shit for a Wolf engine game and Capstone's worst game on offer, the first half dozen levels are set in a sewer with giant rats and slime monsters and the meat of the game itself is extremely repetitious and half-assed in execution) Extra Note: Ugly as sin.

2. Iron Storm (Boring level design, horrible collision detection, abysmal grenade handling, crappy weapons and bullshit difficulty plague this entire affair from the get-go)

3. Blood II: The Chosen (Even though I consider this one a guilty pleasure I cannot deny the very terrible engine and many bugs, bad AI and even worse difficulty balancing with easy being a massive pushover and hard a bloody nightmare) Extra Note: Worst expansion pack for a shooter ever.

4. Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (Another one I admit to liking I'll still tear down for the BULLSHIT enemy reaction times, overly scripted sequences and just as many ridiculous bugs including a script's sector effectors you can SEE in-game early on and prematurely trigger!)

5. NecroVisioN (I really wanted to like this one but it has a spongy feeling, throws too much shit at you all at once and is overall really badly designed with garbage gameplay)

6. Duke Nukem Forever (While not the worst FPS ever made nor the worst game ever made for that matter has obvious inconsistent quality due to the 12 year long development hell it was in, boring level design and very average gameplay, with too many gimmicky mini-games and filler taking up half the space) Extra Note: Only mostly fun on easy mode.

7. Mobile Forces (An extremely boring multiplayer focused FPS with admittedly decent vehicle handling paired with bog standard shooting and crappy weapons, has a very budget-y feeling to it)

8. Turok: Evolution (A royal disappointment for the Turok series, stripping away large exploratory worlds and enemy variety in favor of linear affairs with annoying lizard men and even more irritating flying levels, also buggy with some bad hit detection and unforgiving falling damage)

9. Postal 2 (Yes, it is dumb fun at its core and I've played many hours of it and still play it to this day, but at the heart of it it all it is a garbage FPS, very stiff combat and poorly designed gameplay bring this one down big time aside all its immature and semi-offensive humor) Extra Note: Terrible performance.

10. Red Faction II (Honestly the first one hasn't aged all that well, but it was at least marginally better than its sequel, which IMHO was an absolute bore fest, has made-for-console written all over it and bad conveyance throughout the levels making progression a bitch)

I only have a Top 2, because no FPS is worse than either Angst: Rahz's Revenge or Nerves of Steel.

Most of that top 10 covered mine, so i'll just add one.

Exploding Lips. ...Anything by Godd Games, really, but Exploding Lips is the one I actually went through.

I can't name any other FPS whose controls pissed me off as much. If they worked, RNGesus gave you one hell of a blessing. There were times where the controls were totally unrespsonsive, delayed responsive, too responsive, buttons were assigned that just make no goddamn sense <I seem to recall one of the number pad keys being a critical button needed to play>, and overall it was just one hell of an acid trip.

How about that Daikitana or whatever it's called people like to constantly remind John Romero?

Counter Strike Online by Nexon. What a huge disgrace to the one of the greatest FPS franchises. Other than that, I rather pick other awful games from other genre.

I wanted to say how some of these games are guilty pleasure for me, and maybe name some insufferable dreck I don't see any redeeming qualities in. But then I suddenly had a feeling that it's gonna be just another one of those "list some games that irritated you a little, but pretend they're everything that's wrong with the world" threads.

Can't wait till someone pulls Heretic or something.

I don't play much FPSes outside of DooM, and if I do it's usually one that was critically well-received. I did play Duke Nukem Forever and I thought it was mediocre at best, but probably not the worst FPS ever made. I recall it being a lot less tongue-in-cheek than Duke 3D and was just a big letdown overall. If it didn't have "Duke Nukem" in the title it probably would have been mostly ignored as another generic FPS.

If you include amateur games I've seen some absolute garbage made in Unity. It's surprising how much effort somebody can put into a project and it ends up so bad you'd think they did it on purpose. The worst Unity games I've seen weren't FPSes though, but pseudo-intellectual artsy walking simulators.

It's hard to find the worst FPS games as I never owned nor played any of them, but I heard a decent amount of dishonourable mentions, including:

- Redneck Rampage (for some people)
- Super Noah's Ark 3D
- Daikatana
- Duke Nukem Forever
- Blood II: The Chosen
- Revelations 2012
- Rogue Warrior
- Ethnic Cleansing

There's a terrible Wolfenstein clone called "Immoral Cumbat" that I played out of morbid curiosity. It's an "adult" Wolfenstein clone where you walk through filthy bathrooms and jack off onto killer boobs and dicks and watch pornographic and scatological peep shows.

I really don't know why a lot of people seem to hate this one for, even if it is somehow inferior to the original you have to admit by a long shot it is a masterpiece compared to the third one. And judging everything else listed so far is 1000x more polished.

Yeah, I was about to write something similiar. I actually prefer it to the first one. But really, this is the 'worst FPS' material? Wow.

I don't really play games that I can tell from a mile away that they're trash. But one of the worst shooters I've played was definitively an already mentioned Blood II. Not because it was different but because it was unbalanced and infuriating. I actually had to cheat through one of the levels because the game refused to spawn any health pickups...

As for another popular choice, Duke Nukem Forever, I wouldn't say it was one of the worst. It was bad, mediocre at best but it wasn't completely broken. Disappointing maybe, but not the worst ever. And the 'most disappointing' title would still go to BioShock Infinite.

I haven't even played the third game though. From memory I just found F2 to be very disappointing after the first game, and I never touched it again after the first playthrough.

Don't have a Top 10, but if I did, Daikatana would be a strong candidate.

I don't think I can come up with 10. Maybe 10 across all genres but anyways...

I really enjoyed the first one way back when. The second one pissed me off and like you say it was boring. I didn't play very far into Red Faction 2 and gave up on it. I think the best in the series is Red Faction Guerilla. Now that game was a lot of destructive fun. I still have to finish Armageddon sometime.

I'm not an adamant enough gamer to have a top ten list, but I'll talk a bit about Redneck Rampage. Conceptually speaking, it's great. The redneck theme makes for plenty of cheap laughs and I like that instead of armor, you collect various snacks and alcoholic beverages that you carry around until you need healing. Eating snacks will make you fart, which changes your position slightly (from the force of the fart) and alerts nearby enemies due to the hilarious sound. Drinking alcohol will eventually cause you to get drunk, and depending on the difficulty level, you may spend awhile trying to sober up, all the way unable to move about competently. You can also drink some cheap whisky for a Duke 3D-style steroidal boost, which will actually clear your head if you're already drunk. Whether or not that's a glitch is irrelevant.

Combine that with a wonderfully cartoony aesthetic, backwoods environments--even an attempt at a tornado in a trailer park--and some kooky enemy/weapon designs, and you have the makings of a highly entertaining shooter. The problem was that, of the "big four" from the Build Engine era, this one has the worst mechanics. Every single weapon feels loose and clunky; they're never fully satisfying to use. Collision detection is weird for both player and enemy, so combat can be incredibly awkward. A good 80% of the combat is centered around the same two redneck sprites, so that gets old quick.

Layouts are also very blocky and repetitive, which is unfortunate because the locations are great and offer a lot of potential. Unfortunately, they're just not super memorable and at times I stopped playing out of boredom, because even though I was making progress, the maps were rarely engaging to explore. Honestly, this was a game that could have been as good as Duke Nukem 3D, maybe even in the same ballpark as Blood in terms of pure fun and immersion, but it has too many little problems that add up. I'd like to see a remake.

The main problem I have with Redneck Rampage is that it crashes when I get to the spaceship at the end. Redneck Rampage Rides Again is much better when it comes to crashes (as in none that I remember), and it has some additions to it (you can ride a motorcycle for one thing).

Okay, I'm going to give you a massive steaming pile of persepctive here.

Here is a playthrough of Galactic Hitman.

The title should give something away, but watch it through, it's pretty funny. This. THIS, is a bad FPS. A lot of the games people have been listing in this thread might have been letdown sequels for previous games, might have had troubled development and been released unfinished or unpolished or might genuinely have been a product of poor design, but pretty much all of them have been at least decent compared to the absolute dregs that are out there.

Yeah it's fun to call Duke Nukem Forever or whatever other dumb thing the WORST GAME EVAR because of all the shit and expectation that went with them, but you have to realise these are still actual decent, playable games, with beginnings and endings and actual game mechanics.

I don't think any single game anyone has listed in this thread belongs on a "top 10 worst games" list.

I can't remember the title, but there is a shooter (not first person) that is so disgustingly nihilistic it's getting universally panned by everyone. You play an angsty jerkoff with long hair and a trench coat who just literally spends the entire game killing innocent people. I'm not 16 and it's not 2001, so I couldn't possibly give a shit about the shock value. It's one of those games that makes you question the impact that violence has on the psyche of a game dev.

You mean Hatred? The game that pretty much parodies the stereotypical misanthropic metal head? It was made by former Farm 51 employees. You spend the later half of the game fighting SWAT and military more-so than civilians.

They said it themselves, the game is tongue in cheek. But some people like to take everything so seriously and look for reasons to be offended. I mean, the ending involves him

Spoiler

NUKING THE ENTIRE TOWN.

Interesting. Dunno anything about Farm 51. I'm personally not offended by it, I just think it's disgustingly nihilistic and juvenile.

Worst FPS, here you go:

1- COD:MW 2 , sure that the COD clones had already started before this, but ofc you know the reasons, just look for a thread and you'll see the post.

2- Operation Body Count, awful, who made this piece'o'shit? Oh Capshit i guess, at least Capshit's later games aren't awful as this, but still not good either.

3- Blood II:The Chosen, unbalanced, awful, this game is basiclly a fuck you by Monolith to Blood fans, the game simply fucks you over and over till you give up, even on easy you still die, no matter how skilled you are, way to go, Monoshit, at least there's someone who put a lot of effort fixing the mess Monoshit made and that is VGames.

4- Witchaven, this game has poor close range combat, the weapons break after a few minutes, even if you aren't attacking enemies, seriously, what kind of logic does that have? Hexen proved that hand-to-hand combat didn't have to be bad, and proved so with the Fighter class, whose speciallity is close range combat, whereas WH made it a chore.

5- Rogue Warrior, awful gameplay, but Mickey Rourke's voice acting in the game is badass and hilarious too.

6- America's 10 Most Wanted, is there even a reason for this game to exist, other than hunting down these so famous terrorists? What a joke.

7- Super Noah's Ark 3D, oh boy, another of those religious games, did even the developers read the bible before making this?

8- Necrovision, well well, what do we have here, a Painkiller wannabe i guess and it fails gloriously at trying to be like Painkiller, boring and tedious.

9- Daikatana, we all know what this thing is, no need to say more.

10- Immoral Cumbat, what can i say, other than it's a "Adult" Wolf3D clone, except that it's hilarious and somehow funny, that it makes me wanna play it just for laughs and curiosity.

1. No. Just no. The game is fine. It's the fanbase and hype which isn't.
7. Again, no. Theme aside, this isn't a bad game at all. You might as well call Wolfenstein 3D shit while you're at it.

While Super Noah's Ark 3D is far from a bad game, the fact that it feels like a Wolfenstein 3D reskin is what caused its infamy (along with the rumours of id Software giving the source code to Wisdom Tree to mock Nintendo's censorship of the SNES port). The PC version, from what I saw, attempts to correct that through having rendered floors and ceilings.

Necrovision is fucking great; I don't know what you guys are smoking.

Easily the best of the "old-school revival" FPSs.

Chex Quest was a Doom clone, too. like, in and out, even if most of the enemies didn't fire hitscans anymore. and Chex Quest is fondly remembered by a lot of people, and even won a bloody Cacoward here. maybe if Noah's Ark was a terrible reskin, like it has offensive imagery in it, or if it were a clone of an actual shitty game, but it plays exactly like Wolfenstein 3D. one might as well say they don't like Wolfenstein 3D if Noah's Ark is that terrible.

granted, most of my leniency towards it stems from the fact that a Wolf3D source-port developer gets a cut from the sales, but hey, money for a good cause. and again, it's a re-skin of Wolf3D, just like Chex is a re-skin of Doom. could've been a lot worse.
