Clonehunter Posted March 20, 2016 Not so much worst FPS, as I tend to avoid the bad games and watch those through YouTube, so looking at what I've played personally: 1. Operation: Body Count - Corridor 7 was a decent wolf clone with some good ideas. When Capstone followed up with this title, it's a wonder how they actually regressed instead of making something better. There's some neat features in Bodycount, such as burning furniture, blowing up walls, and the simple effects they used to simulate bullet holes and glass, but overall the game is more of a very lazy Wolf 3D total conversion. Filled to the brim with ugly artwork and copy and paste levels. Gameplay is strangely worse than Wolf3D. Nothing lacks punch, weapons at times seem unresponsive, and the feedback from shooting enemies is poor. The game also forces you through several levels of sewers filled with Giant Rats and Swamp Monsters (?) in a game that's otherwise a Die Hard inspired game. I could talk more about what makes this game legitimately bad and not something I dislike out of personal preference, but that would take up a lot of space and require more effort in writing than the devs put into making the game itself. 2. PO'd - This Saturn/PSX title looks like it could be a thrilling Doom-like ride. Instead, we have a fairly incoherent mess of a game riddled with ugly visuals, bad controls, and un-attractive level design. However, the game's tongue-in-cheek nature spruces up the duller parts of the game, an it's not exactly un-fun. Now, I've played the PSX version, I heard somewhere that this version was a bit stripped down from the Saturn (?) version, so it may just be this version of the game I have a problem with. 3. Daikatana - There's no getting around it. This is a bad game. Filled with bugs, glitches, and prone to crashing, Daikatana would be a mediocre shooter at best without them. Suffering from poor gameplay, bad bugs, bland voice acting, and incredibly boring and drawn out cutscenes, Daikatana has little going right. Weapons are either not powerful enough or too powerful, while others just aren't practical (Such as the shotgun that slowly fires four-shot volleys). The game often crashes every time I try to play it, and Co-Op is broken to the point you need to use noclip cheats to beat it. Levels were okay, but often filled with boring enemies (Like frogs and dragonflies, oh why?) The only thing that seemed to go right was the art direction. Aesthetically, I actually like the way this game looks. I'd almost say that's it's downright pretty. Perhaps not comparable to the other games released around the same time, Daikatana looks good for what it is. If only it played good. 4. Turok Evolution - Although not exactly a bad game, it's incredibly frustrating and surprisingly boring. Aesthetically it has what I would expect from a Turok game: Muddy ground, muddy textures, Dinosaurs, something I can only call Cave-Punk, and Sci-Fi sensibilities placed in a place that looks like the past but unique in it's own way. Now, I've only played this on the Xbox, so I don't know if it's any different elsewhere. But early levels comprised of the boring task clubbing Alligators to death, only to late try and shoot them with a pistol or arrows and more often than not having to miss do to the imprecise controls. I'm still slogging throughn this title on rare occasions, hoping to find some better gameplay down the road. By no means a bad game, but it's not really good either. 5. Trespasser - The thing is, I actually like this game. I like the story and lore you can find, I like exploring the Site B island, I like the gunplay, I like the attempts at Physics related puzzles, and I love the overall aesthetic and feel of the game. However, none of this excuses just how much of a buggy mess Trespasser is. Falling damage is weirdly inconsistent. Instead of dying, Dinosaurs just go prone and sometimes they just stand still and stop moving (Yet they can still inexplicably kill you if you touch their mouth). The AI is both moronically difficult and incredibly retarded. The sense of wonder and adventure is often shattered when you see a Brachiosaurus off in the distance just standing there completely motionless, only to kick into drive when you walk near it. Most of the animal animations are also terrible and induce more laughs over thrills, until they suddenly pounce on you and start tearing your health apart. It also incites shrills of terror every time the main character's arm bends in a way that no arm should ever bend in. Coupled with fairly muddy graphics, Trespasser is a great experiment, and could probably use a remake with more time and a bigger budget, but as it is it's a sad lost cause that only previews what could have a much better game (As I understand it, there is some kind of restoration project in the works). 6. Rise of the Triad (2013) - Whelp, everyone else said it. So here I say it. Rise of the Triad. Here it sits in the middle of the list. I don't think it's terrible, and it actually has a damn fun multiplayer component. That alone saves it from complete destruction, but the singleplayer is essentially at that point where they thought mimicking the original to the bone was a good idea. The original wasn't even a great game. It was good, but it was good in that older format. It's one of those games that can't exist any other way, and when you try to make it exist in another way, it comes off as bland and repetitive. However, the new version makes it worse with unforgiving enemies that are difficult to pick out of the dull backgrounds. Also, hoverpads and bouncepads are pretty silly in the modern scene. They were cool when they tried to spruce up the original game so it wasn't so obviously a Wolf3D clone, but a mediocre feature isn't a great one. Gunplay is mostly bland, and levels are pitifully linear and boring. However, the different rocket launchers are admittedly cool and fun to use. So at least there's that, and that's... Something. 7. Cabela's Deer Hunt 2004 Season - "World's Number One Hunting Games" is the grammatically questionable headline on the cover of this title. Although it has some cool features here and there, there's a strangeness to his hunting title that never really makes me feel like I'm actually hunting deer, but rather, I'm just following a single path to the deer that obviously ahead, which I then just hunch down and shoot with whatever is on hand. Yah, you might have cool weapons, snowmobiles, trucks, and boats to ride around on, but there's otherwise little strategy in this point-and-shoot adventure. This is coupled with fairly poor looking levels and iffy-controls. However, the game does look nice, and shooting things is fun due to responsive feedback from doing so. It's not a bad game, per say, but there's much better out there when it comes to hunting simulators. As it happens, one of my favorite games happens to be a different Deer-shooter released around the same time as this one. It's much better, and doesn't need an Xbox to play. 8. Counter-Strike (Xbox) - Counter-Strike was popular enough to make it onto the original Xbox. It featured muddied graphics, incredibly unforgiving AI, difficult shooting mechanics, and a now dead Xbox Live feature which turns this into a mostly single payer game. However, the game also features system linking, exclusive maps that are actually rather fun, and the ability to play songs that you've burned to the Xbox's memory in the background. The latter is a feature that I don't think exists in too many games, but my Xbox library is small, and it's the only system from that Gen that I remember even having the ability to hold music on it. The game has fallen because of the times, but it's inferior to the PC version of the game, and more or less begins to turn this list into a list of games that aren't bad but I still have problems with. 9. Half-Life: Blue Shift - This is so far the only Half-Life game I have finished. And at first, I really liked it. But in retrospect, I can't remember why. It was basically a stripped down, easier version of the original Half-Life. It didn't really offer anything new to the formula, and lacked any interesting boss encounters. It was very much a level addon in terms of it being an expansion, but by offering nothing new to add to the original game, it falls short of being anything notable. I wasn't a huge fan of Opposing Force, but that game actually tried to add a lot. It was still very much Half-Life, but it tried to give players a new experience on top of what they already knew. Decay introduced co-op, which while not huge, was still more than what Blue Shift gave. Blue Shift, is as such, the weakest Half-Life game. However, I still did enjoy playing it, and it did not suffer from any horrible glitches or things that made it unplayable. 10. Call of Duty: Finest Hour - Again, I actually like this game. A bit, actually. I really felt immersed in the early campaign due to what were pretty good visuals on the PS2 and the bombastic soundtrack and sound-editing. In fact, the first few levels with the Russians are some of my favorite video game moments. But then we start to continue the game, and problems set in. This includes some boring sniper missions, an Okay tank mission, fun levels with the Brits, and a stupidly hard American campaign. Like, really hard campaign. The thing is, this difficulty presented in the game is wholly artificial because of the lack of save points. The auto-save points are few and far between, which means that you can't mess up too often. The game requires, no, it demands perfect gameplay from the player. That's fine and dandy, but when you have to escort a tank through enemy fire that consists of constantly spawning soldiers who shoot nothing but the tank and you have no saves on the horizon and a boat load of useless allies... Well, bullshit ensues. I came close to dying many times, but the level always boiled down to the tank being destroyed because it was nigh-impossible to save it. However despite this, I still found a lot of fun to be had, and I enjoyed the parts of the game that actually tried to be educational in teaching war history, something that the last CoDs have apparently said Fuck-All too (Perhaps, I suppose, in favor of more cinematic story telling and being set in the future). It also had shitty multiplayer. However, the game lands at ten because it really isn't a bad game, and is not really an offender. I just haven't played too many honest to god Bad Games. Fuck me that's a text wall. Whelp, gotta dare you all to suffer through it. 0 Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted March 20, 2016 Turok Evolution gets fun when you get the gravity weapon, the napalm for the flamethrower and the dark matter cubes. Just don't think about the flying levels, just pray that you are lucky enough that the enemies will show mercy. 0 Share this post Link to post

june gloom Posted March 21, 2016 Fuzzyfireball said:So what? How does that not make it a bad game? Alright, time to unpack this. I'm extremely bored so prepare for line-by-line rebuttals because I just feel like being "that guy" today. Fuzzyfireball said:The character is archaic and pathetic, the humor is dated references and memes A symptom of the game's long development. Duke is an embodiment of the 90s -- anyone who's upset at him clearly either doesn't remember the 90s or has chosen to forget it. The dated references and memes are because the game effectively ceased feature implementation around 2006/7. The DLC, which Gearbox put together, updates the humor by a lot. Fuzzyfireball said:the gunplay is as dull as a bag of rocks Eh, that's subjective. It had a lot in common with Halo, though I guess not quite as interesting. Fuzzyfireball said:the level design is a straight line of mediocrity Welcome to the post-Half-Life era where most action-oriented FPS games between 1998 and around 2006 were linear. At least it's not a CoD-style cover shooter, eh? Fuzzyfireball said:overly angry tirade Probably should see a professional if you're this angry over a video game. Fuzzyfireball said:You can't be mad at people for dissing DNF. I'm not mad. I'm saying they're short-sighted. They're probably also really really angry over stupid shit. Hmm, this seems familiar. Fuzzyfireball said:Especially when they gave us that complete bullshit fake 2001 trailer The trailer was not fake, sugar cookie. It was depicting a real game that was in development. That game was never completed and development was restarted. Fuzzyfireball said:that a modder managed to re-create using the Build engine for FREE. And it was good! It's a pity that we never got DNF 2001, but welcome to the world of George Broussard where dreams go to die. Long story short: DNF isn't a bad game. It's not even a mediocre game. It's a pretty decent mid-00s game that should have come out 10 years ago instead of 5 years ago and shows its age for it. It has its flaws like any game but it's a perfectly fine, fun game that shows at least a passing understanding of what makes the games it rips off (Halo, Half-Life) fun. 0 Share this post Link to post
VGamingJunkie Posted March 21, 2016 The problem is the game seemed far too scatter-brained. On one hand, it was trying to make modern references like Halo and Deadspace and had modern mechanics but, on the other hand, they were trying to mash in Duke 3D inspired macho while shoehorning in puzzles, that boring scavenger hunt, and vehicle segments that weren't all that good. The shrinking puzzle was interesting, but it seemed to get in the way of the action a bit too much. Maybe it being in development hell so long contributed to this, it's like they wanted to be a little of everything. If they're going to capture the magic of Duke 3D, they should take a more Shadow Warrior or Doom 2016 approach and go all in, ditching the half-baked "modern" elements and going full throttle action. Also, maybe less raunchy and more action hero, it seemed to be trying too hard to be cool and edgy. 1 Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted March 21, 2016 Honestly it is the shitty level design that tickles my pickle when it comes to DNF. Some of the maps were utter bollocks (I hate anything to do wuth Duke Burger, even Duke 3D's Duke Burger sucked) with problems like vast empty fuck-allness going on, horrible vehicular chores, terrible shootouts and uninteresting dragged out boss fights that are just frustration incarnate on higher difficulties. But I found it a guilty pleasure (much like Rouge Warrior), something charming about how old it felt and how confused it was, a great mix of innocent cluelessness and ancient long dead gameplay choices that just made it a loveable trainwreck that stayed on the rails and kept crashing. Also I kinda liked the multiplayer, fists only king of the hill with nothing but beer and steriods for weapons turned into a glorious fucking mess of pain and laughter, spastic srink ray vs freeze ray matches were too fun as well (and don't even get me started on the evil as fuck unlimited ammo games of capture the babe, tripmines will rule the earth). To each their own as they say. 0 Share this post Link to post

While it made my top ten list of worst FPSes and having gone though it myself late last year I don't think it's the worst game ever but it's definitely a bad game with mediocre shooting, which is the least offensive thing about it and the only thing I found some enjoyment in at times. I don't understand the twelve or so people on earth who actually like DNF, but then again they're probably those same twelve that actually liked ACM. Remilia Scarlet Posted March 21, 2016 In no particular order... BioShock - I *HATE* it. Every time I try it, I end up hating it even more. It just has never grabbed me. Rage - I hate this more than BioShock. The technical glitches made it even worse. Battle Frenzy - Not too horribly bad, and interesting from a tech standpoint, but slow and boring. Rise of The Triad 2013 - I disliked this for pretty much the same reasons that others have brought up. Marathon - Again, it never hooked me. I always found it boring and awkward to play. Operation: Bodycount - For the same reasons others have mentioned. Halo 2 - The first game was pretty fun at the time, but I was heavily disappointed by the changes and direction of the series after that. Halo 2 was when I stopped caring about it. Terminator: Future Shock - I remember this one being very awkward to play, pretty boring, and pretty slow. XS - Slow, short view distance, and iffy controls. This is one where it's so crappy, it's almost fun. At least the intro cinematic wasn't bad, and I seem to remember the music being OK. Unreal Tournament 3 - This didn't even feel like an Unreal Tournament game. It felt like a console shooter running on some obscure engine that was ported to PC. 0 Share this post Link to post
june gloom Posted March 21, 2016 Wait, Marathon is one of the worst FPS games you've played, simply because it didn't hook you? I admit I'm the kind of person who tries to find the good in games because I can't find it in people, and I didn't have a huge problem with ACM other than it could've done with 6-12 months more work; I suspect it was released in its initial state because Sega was starting to get suspicious. So no, I'm not gonna get on your case for liking Blood II, or really almost any other game. 0 Share this post Link to post

Everybody has their own definition of "bad" right? Opinions are like assholes and all that jazz? Well DNF fits snugly in with my own definition of "bad", perhaps even "horrible shite". I barely finished the thing and when I did I felt physically drained. Like slogging through a smelly swamp of shit. I didn't expect anything from DNF when I went in. Completely neutral feelings when I started, and it slowly crashed into the ground. So I'm not being shortsighted for not liking it. Like I said, Blood 2 is so bad it's funny/enraging. He zooms around like he's on rollerskates, the AI is atrocious to the point of absurd, the voice acting is another level of terrible, it crashes more than a drunk frat kid, the level design makes ZERO sense progression wise, the naga boss is borderline unfair, the cutscene scripts will often break, the difficulty settings are so unbalanced that on "easy", you gib people with your pistol, "medium" feels like hard, and "hard" feels like a giant middle finger right up your ass, with enemies draining your health in an instant and tougher enemies becoming bullet sponges on top of that, getting stuck in level geometry, enemies running in place, doors killing you... It's just a huge fucking mess. You can't look away because it's an absolute train wreck. An absolute disaterpiece in programming. There's so much to talk about. So much to laugh at. So much to piss you off. Which is why even though Blood 2 belongs in the cat's litter box, I value it higher than DNF. 0 Share this post Link to post

Tetzlaff Posted March 21, 2016 It's been a while since I played Blood 2, but I don't remember it being that bad. It's a mixed bag. Some levels were cool, like the sewer level or that other dimension. The subway train level was annoying, especially the second visit. Level design makes no sense progression wise? I remember that was the case in Soldier of Fortune (another game from that time), but Blood 2 made a progression from urban settings to high tech labs and finally another dimension. And there was also some gothic church in between? Well, at least the settings were diverse... The observations you made about difficulty levels and enemy behaviour are true, but there are really much worse FPS out there. 0 Share this post Link to post
Pencil of Doom Posted March 21, 2016 Ok, after seeing a lot of hate for Blood 2, you should try this mod:http://www.moddb.com/mods/blood-2-the-chosen-extra-crispy, it fixes a lot of the mess that Monolith put into the game, although the game is still hard though, but worth a try. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted March 21, 2016 I tried that Extra Crispy mod a while back after my excruciating Suicide run of the vanilla game and I didn't really like it. It seemed too over-engineered and like they were trying to sugarcoat a turd. I know I did like DarkAct once, as it had some features exclusive to it that were pretty cool, like limb removal. But nothing made for B2 is perfect, much like the game. There wasn't enough variation in the level design really, the modern aesthetic dominated 90% of the game, with the only really interesting environments reminiscent of the original game being at the very end. There's some seriously strange level progression though, like a part where you go through a small apartment, reach the street, enter a diner, destroy the kitchen and somehow go into a restroom at a subway station. Yeeaaah, what were they thinking? 0 Share this post Link to post

I've already detailed why Unreal is a bad game, but here's another tidbit: It's a tech demo that does nothing to demo its tech. It feels like a journey, and after you get out of the water temple is when things really feel like they pick up and get serious. Also the combat does what it needs to do, and the AI presents a nice challenge as the roll, dodge and retreat, which is more then you can say for most FPS in the late or early 90's. But the real star of the show is just the levels. Exploring, reading the transmissions you pick up and soaking in the atmosphere and amazing soundtrack by Alexander Brandon. Also the sky islands are awesome to look at, and the ending is so nihilistic and bittersweet. It's an underrated gem in my book. Would love to see them go back to this but that will probably never happen. The expansions sucked though, just recycled content, absolutely nothing special. 0 Share this post Link to post

That's not really true, while the outdoor maps are pretty big and empty there's a lot of big levels that are fleshed out with places to visit and explore. There's also a lot of FX and small details and some interesting level setpieces that involve engine capabilities or at least features that weren't shown in a shooter before. Definitely a better engine than HL's modified GoldSrc, which while HL has a lot more going on than say id's Quake II, isn't as convincing today with its attempts at real world settings or realistic enemy behavior (it still has game-isms and odd progression and stupid bugs but not as offensive or game breaking as Blood II's). Also don't really think the AI in Unreal was bad either, at least the Skaarj weren't committing suicide like the HECU with their grenades. Admittedly Krall and Mercenaries weren't the best fighters but they rarely did something strange. Never played Rune yet but for UE1 Deus Ex is pretty friggin' ugly, color scheme and environment-wise, I know it's meant to be dark and depressing but it's certainly not as flashy as Unreal. It makes up for the lack of visual fidelity with the rich universe and interactivity though. PsychoGoatee said:There are thousands of positive DNF reviews on steam, more than there are negative ones. Clonehunter Posted March 30, 2016 One game I forgot to include in my list was Carnivores: Cityscape. I liked the first three games in the franchise, which were simple hunting simulators replacing deer with Dinosaurs that could kill you. The second game offered a lot of exploration opportunities, and due to the fairly odd and archaic AI the game's setting had a very unique, but odd and otherworldly aesthetic. Generally, the game's maps were cryptic and unnerving. Cityscape was game 4 and dropped the hunting simulation in favor of a more involved, yet very weak, story about Dinosaurs running amok in some cyberpunk city. Essentially, it was a budget version of an AvP game, where you could play as a marine or dinosaur. Combat was downright awful, and the game looks rather bland, minus some of the city levels which were kind of nice looking. The dinosaur designs were nice, too, but other than that it was a very bland, boring, and often frustrating game. The newer Carnivores game was an improvement by going back to basics. 0 Share this post Link to post
DoomzRules Posted March 30, 2016 Clonehunter said:One game I forgot to include in my list was Carnivores: Cityscape. I enjoyed it at the time (I was four) but I did like the original ones much better. Which reminds me, Carnivores is a great franchise.... they could revive it. You know make a new one on the Unreal Engine 4, and really just return back to the basics of Carnivores. Which is? Hunting dinosaurs, getting the trophies of said dinosaur, and well.... trying not to die at the hands of a dinosaur... I swear, the first two Carnivore games were genuinely scary for me at the age of four.... you always felt scared because you didn't know if a T-Rex or a Ceratosaurus or Velociraptor would pop out and kill you.... 0 Share this post Link to post

I played only the mobile version (and the PC version too for a short time). There already is a reboot of the Carnivores game, isn't there? Is Cityscape genuinely that bad, as a standalone game? A T-Rex never pops up, unless you chose to hunt it. Its the Velociraptors that are harder to spot and escape from (from a distance, they look a lot like the Gallimimus). 0 Share this post Link to post
Clonehunter Posted March 30, 2016 I mentioned the reboot in passing. It's name is "Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter Reborn." It's okay, and adds mutant dinos that can randomly appear. The game's parasaurs are also exceedingly cute. However, I find it odd that either Tranqs or lethal rounds will add dinosaurs to your trophy room, whereas before you could only obtain trophies if you kill a dinosaur, sacrificing more points in the process. So in the new way, you have no reason not to tranq dinos, as your trophy room will collect whatever you want it too. Also fewer weapons and you can't choose what dinosaurs will appear on what maps, which means that only one or two maps have all of the dinosaurs available at once. Cityscape was fairly lame. It looked okay, but none of the weapons were useful, and most combat consisted of running backwards, taking damage, and shooting things directly in front of you as everything was pretty damn fast. There's no save function, and big carnivores can end you very quickly. Also boring escort missions and playing as the dinosaurs is best reserved for multiplayer, not that you'll have anyone to play with. 0 Share this post Link to post

I kinda wish they'd port it to the PS4 and make it a PS4-PC Exclusive. =3 0 Share this post Link to post
MortisCausaDonatio Posted April 4, 2016 Nobody mentioned Sniper: Path of vegenance. It's a low budget FPS from 2001 made by a Polish company This game was very popular I my country (and it even have a crappy hungarian dub) because of a Popular bad game reviewer on youtube. The game it self well known for it's hillarious bugs. for example: You can Fly pressing the crouch and the jump button in the same time. Or there's a bus that is literally bleeding when you shoot it. Overall it's just a crappy fps but bugs make it kinda fun 0 Share this post Link to post
CARRiON Posted April 5, 2016 I'm picky when it comes to any genre. 10. Rise of the Traid '13 09. Blood 2 (and it's god awful piece of shit excuse for an expansion pack) 08. Shogo: Mobile Armor Division 07. Vietnam: Black Ops 06. Gore: Ultimate Soldier 05. Secret Service 04. Patriots: A Nation Under Fire 03. Unreal 2: Awakening 02. Iron Storm 01. Duke Nukem Forever I'll throw some honorable mentions out there: Operation Bodycount, Isle of the Dead, Lethal Tender, Redneck Rampage, Marathon (personally), Shadow Warrior (yes, the classic one, personally), Depth Dwellers, Postal 2, F.E.A.R. 3, Quake 2, Quake 3's expansion pack, NAM, TekWar, Corridor 7, Serious Sam 2, CyberMage, C.I.A Operative, Global Operations, Halo, Soldier of Fortune 3, and Fortress of Dr. Radiaki. 0 Share this post Link to post
DoomUK Posted April 5, 2016 Terminator: War of the Machines. Not nearly as bad as some of the garbage being posted, but it surely deserves a (dis)honorable mention. 0 Share this post Link to post
