non disturbing doom

i wish to one day get my silly ol' mom to play doom, but she has been frightened of doom the day it came out and continues to be disturbed by it, wich got me thinking, if you had to remove all the violent behaviour and disturbing imagery from doom without modifing the game play how would you do it? i suppose removing all the blood and editing textures is a start but what do you think the killing should be replaced by? some sort of laser tag thing? water guns, and the enemies just lay down when "defeated"? what other kind of changes do you think could be made so that not even the faintest of heart could find fault with it?

There's Adventures of Square, though it definitely has very different gameplay compared to Doom. Not that this is a bad thing!

Doomguy becomes a rockstar; enemies are just over-zealous fans who enthusiastically hug you when you meet (for melee) or throw copies of your CDs towards you in the hope you'll sign them (projectiles). Hitscanners could be dealing you morale damage, IE, being the teenage sons and daughters of your fans who hang around at the back of your gig and criticise your act/uploading scathing reviews and negative live-tweets. All your guns are various ways of deploying merch and handshakes... the BFG would be you grabbing the microphone and announcing to your audience that they were about to hear a brand new song, live and exclusive to them alone.

edit: Damage floors could be comfy, tempting places to sleep since you never get any rest on your tour-bus.

Bonus: All the skull props could literally be explained as props for your stageshow.

Bonus 2: your player character's natural agility could come from cocaine, as long as you don't actually explain that bit in the manual.

Bonus 3: it would solve a puzzle concerning Doom that has always confused me - where the hell is that terrible blues rock coming from? =P

ok i think ive got it, the player is transported to the land of the monsters. the monsters are friendly and dont want you to leave, so theyre attacks would be sleeping spells, youre weapons would be food launchers like in noha's ark 3d and when given sufficient food the monsters would get distracted eating (this would replace the deaths) in nightmare mode they would smply finish eating and try to put you to sleep again

For 5 or so years I've been working on and off on removing all of Doom's gore and satanic imagery. I do it mainly for my own amusement, but I guess it could be useful in the end. Every now and then I see people asking for family-friendly alternatives for doom.

Adventures of Square may have colorful shapes, but it is very violent.

Brutal Doom

Ok. Features for a non disturbing Doom:
1-Friendly weapons (Laser, ice beam).
2-No blood (transparent blood texture).
3-"Friendly" enemies (demons look like animatronics)
4-Casual death scenes (iced=frozen, lasered=shut down demon, player caught=head looking at the floor)
5-Pleasant textures (tiled floors, casual paintings, etc)
6-Bright areas/dimmed areas (labatory lights, nighttime streets)

Just have her play Marathon. Probably more up her alley. Or Thief, that's somewhat popular with older people.

To my knowledge there's still no Bible-themed Doom mod on the level of Super Noah's Ark 3D. Somebody should do that just for the doing of it :P

What makes you think that's safe for work? It's the opposite, because it also involves religion. Someone should still do a divine or angelic Doom though, but it's off-topic.

This is tricky. Its hard to imagine seeing Doom through the lens of someone who is nauseated by it. Are you looking to make some kind of TC that is compatible with PWADs? Or do you just want this person to try it?

To think about Doom critically, we see Doom as a game where anything can happen and it doesn't matter what it teaches us because it exists only in the context of the game and when we shut it off were right back in the real world where none of that information from the game matters. If people are disturbed by Doom, its because they are bridging the gap between fantasy and reality by imagining what life would be like if you were actually holding a gun, pointing it at a human person and unloading on them until they scream and bleed all over the place, and for some reason instead of mourning that you had to do that or else you'd be killed, you move on to the next guy, then they next guy, until in the boundaries of a single level you've created an entire massacre. Not many people could seriously put themselves in the shoes of doomguy.

We've grown up knowing that:

1. We don't solve our problems with violence
2. When someone is hurt, you help them
3. When someone dies, you mourn their loss
4. Gun violence is a serious problem with our world
5. Death is permanent
6. Treat others the way you would want to be treated
7. Competitive sports or activities where there are no hard feelings are healthy

So the TC or mod or what have you would have to be accomodating to those concepts. Not necessarily by actively helping people when they're hurt or having a ceremony for people that have died in the game, but ensure that the context of the game doesn't allow for that to happen in the first place.

I'd personally recommend some sort of pop culture reference motif such as Star Wars or perhaps Tron. You could even try something like Heretic. Something that sells the fact that this is "fantasy" immediately from the second you look at it. I also think you would want to remove the permanence of death by making enemies turn into explosions when you "stop" them, and then disappear permanently as they are now eliminated from play, but not "injured" or "dead." No one really knows if the lasers in Star Wars hurt or not, for all we know they just use some sort of explosive force to knock people out of the way so they can't stop us from moving forward. You're going to need to use something abstract like that for the weapons in your TC as well. Water guns wouldn't stop anyone, sling shots would hurt, lasers and paintball might work. A magic wand that makes people vanish or turn into something harmless could work too, but you'd need a reason to get bigger and better wands and for some enemies to be more resilient to magic or lasers.

Sorry i didn't give you any specific guidelines or strong suggestions, but I just want to help put things into perspective if you were seriously considering moving on with this. I could assist you with it further if you'd like.

On joe's defense, it's non disturbing Doom for his mom, not his family. H-Doom doesn't have blood, and no one dies. The weapons are water guns. It's a joke. And his mother might be into this sorta thing so...(not saying she is)

I think this might work, mainly because it removes all Demons, satanic imagery, mostly gore, and macabre atmosphere. I think if you wanted a mod that could be loaded with other wads you could replace the enemies with silly looking aliens and go a goofy space theme, like a walking dopefish would be good model for the look. Clean up textures to not be creepy and such.

If you don't activate the cutscenes it could be pretty much fine for OP's purpose.

If anything, I'd like to see a more disturbing Doom. Doom 3 kinda got it right in that respect, and Doom 4 too as it seems.

But to call the stock vanilla Doom look "disturbing"...well, not unless you found 80s Metal album covers/posters disturbing. And I mean the classic Iron Maiden style art, not the harder stuff.

This thread is a little embarrassing to be honest. You can't really make Doom not disturbing. Some people are going to be upset by violent imagery, Satanic overtones, et cetera. Rather than alter a work beyond recognition, find similar alternatives of a less disturbing nature. That's what I like about first person games -- there's something for everyone out there!

Unless first person games make you puke of course.
