Questions of Eternal signifigance.

Recommended Posts

While for most wads I plan on using either Deemster's 4MB SC-55 soundfont or Scc1t2.sf2 (not decided yet), there is one notable exception to this: Eternal Doom. It has been said that the music for this classic wad was composed on a Wave Blaster and three AWE32's. Does anybody know which tracks were composed with which, and if I had to choose between between 1mbgm.sf2 (Official AWE32 soundfont) and Deemster's ProteusGM soundfont, which would be more faithful to the eternal doom compositions?

Considering the flaws of ProteusGM (certain notes not holding long enough for my tastes...unless Eternal Doom is supposed to sound like that), I am stuck with 1mbgm.sf2, which most of the music has been composed for, and weedsgm3, which the soundtrack "sounds GREAT" with. Which do you recommend?

If you use my WeedsGM3 soundfont, you'll be hearing what I hear :)

P.S. I also have a very minor update for it here -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/WeedsGM4_Update.zip , but it isn't (as of yet) combined with WeedsGM3 (so you have to "stack" it above WeedsGM3 with whatever MIDI device that you're using).

P.P.S. This is what "DOOMin'" sounds like on a Wave Blaster (1) -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWD9I0Gk4c . I started composing on a PC using a WB1 way back when, and quite a bit of the ED1 music was written on it.

Later I got my first AWE32, and began using custom and retail soundfonts for composing with.

I LOVE the sound of the WB1, but it's like I've posted around the Internet, whatever suits your taste :)

Here's a discussion thread along the same topic (re: overall sound) -> http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=27095 , see my 4 replies in that thread for my opinion on the subject :)

Just wanted to jump and remind you guys that ProteusGM was a failed attempt at mimicking the sound of the Wave Blaster 1 using some commercial Proteus soundfounts :P Wave Blaster Archive, my third attempt, is sampled using a real Create Wave Blaster 1, and as such sounds MUCH more like the real thing.

You can download the sf2 here: http://1drv.ms/u/s!Ap-0SHCYq2AljA-sG1e4WBtrd989

Here is DOOMin' played on it:

Why not use General User GS? Most of the instruments sound better than both 1mbgm and gzdoom.sf2 (especially the xylophone and synth type instruments, my god they are so loud on the gzdoom soundfont, Graf definitely needs to tweak the volume settings on those)

...because I wanted to use the soundfont(s) that was(/were) most faithful to or recommended by the original source/composer?

If you want authentic (as in: what the composer used back then), use Wave Blaster Archive.sf2. If you want what the composer himself recommends these days, use the Weeds soundfont.

But since the beauty of General Midi is the instrument compatibility between hundreds of (GM compatible) synths, choose whatever sounds good to your ears :) It's all a matter of taste. General User GS sounds perfectly fine too.

The problem with that is, some tunes have been composed with Wave Blaster, others have been composed with AWE32 (1mbgm.sf2)

The whole Eternal Doom soundtrack was composed with a Creative Wave Blaster. Later on, Rich got multiple AWE32 cards and collected hundreds of soundfonts, eventually combining some of them to create his Weeds soundfont.

When I Still had Facebook Rich and I had many conversations about midi and soundcards.

The wiki also only mentions that he used a Wave Blaster: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Eternal_Doom

Thanks for the advice. The Doom Wiki indeed mentions the three AWE32 cards. Maybe Rich can cast some light on this since I am very Confused lol.  @rfnagel
