Aliens: Colonial Marines for GZDoom

The 2014 final release of Aliens: Colonial Marines for GZDoom is easily one of the best WADs I've played in a very long time. There isn't any footage of the latest release on Youtube, but there are videos of the game's previous releases. The maps in the earlier versions were smaller and more straight forward, and the number of monsters pursuing you seemed a lot lower.

Levels have a monster count of around 200, but that number is virtually infinite as Xenomorphs rapidly spawn all around you, and you simply don't have anywhere near the resources needed to deal with all of them. You have to always know precisely where you're going at all times, as moving from point A to point B often involves being pursued by hordes of Xenomorphs at any given time. Xenomorphs are fast and powerful, and their chestburster and facehugger buddies are also quite strong. When you're sprinting down the many labyrinthine corridors, losing so much as a split second as the result of running into a crate can mean the difference between life and death. Sentry guns are very useful, but their quantities are limited, and clearing out an entire area only buys just a few precious seconds of time. All the while you're having to manage your limited resources and trying to figure out where you're supposed to be going. The game is spectacularly difficult.

But it is an excellent title that fans of Aliens should definitely check out. It takes a lot of inspiration from Alien Trilogy for the PS1, but far improves upon it. Makes great use of GZDoom's open graphics library capabilities. Sound design is fantastic. Weapons look and perform exactly as you'd want them to. The atmosphere is outstanding, and there's a lot of well earned tension. It's up there with Aliens vs Predator 2 and Alien vs Predator (the Capcom beat 'em up) for being one of the very best games based off of Aliens.
