I am making a map for something fun after a long hiatus of not mapping - At least, properly.

This is not fully done and there are still things to do, but I like how it is looking.

Making custom vanilla textures is a pain, and so is making textures out of graphics from a 2D game.

Yes. There is currently a lot of them. Some areas aren't even textured at all yet.

You take a photo (or download a public domain one) then use GIMP's resynthesizer plugin to repeat details, heal irregularities, and enforce horizontal or vertical tiling. The resynthesizer is like Photoshop's content aware fill, but since I'm more familiar with GIMP, it gives me better results. No drawing skill necessary.

There are four textures, 3 at 256x256, 1 at 256x128. I'm using GZDoom, which lets me cheat on the sizes. They're all different edits of the same photo (it was an Egyptian pyramid). They go well with the SILVER textures, so I started making this level today, "Silver Mine".

Three 6-map Doom II episodes, making 18 maps. Boom Compatible. It will have custom music by my friend Korp and also the wad will have custom enemies and weapons. Most of the textures from Freedoom and the pistol sprite is somewhere off of Realm 667. These are some screenshots of the first finished map, E1M2 a.k.a. MAP02 of the first episode. The wad will be called Moon's Hatred.

@mxbobbie49: just so you can have accurate credits, that pistol is from the Nintendo 64 port of Duke Nukem 3D, with the Doom guy's glove added.

 

Edit: Most of the textures shown are originally from Aquatex by jmickle66666666, which was later incorporated into Freedom.
