Good horror movies that don't suck?

It's pretty obvious Hollywood has, for quite some time now, completely lost touch with what "horror" means in the context of filmmaking. We have all these PG-13 films constantly being shat out, many of them relying on very un-scary gimmicks such as supposedly found footage, supernatural bullshit that relies on the reactions of god-fearing Christians, excessive gore that is semi-pornographic in presentation and, perhaps most pathetically, unseen forces that push and pull on attractive, screaming teenagers. It's pretty dumb. So what's out there that REALLY is scary? It doesn't have to be new. Here are a few of my favorite horror/horror-themed movies, just to give you an idea.

Although you seem to have some resentment for found footage, the Blair Witch Project is a bit of a classic and Barry Levinson's The Bay I found to be legitimately frightening (or at least made me wary of lakes and ponds).

Alright, I got some treats for ya:

The Babadook - probably my favourite overall horror movie. It's about more than just the monster.

Cube - great aesthetic, concept, execution. Fun to let your imagination go wild with this one.

Circle - if you liked the above, you'll love this one. Again, more about the dark side of human nature than an 'oogie-boogie' monster of some kind.

It Follows is a masterwork. It takes everything I like from previous eras of film -- 80s, 90s, early 00s -- and turns it on its head.

I stand firm that John Carpenter's "The Thing" is the best horror movie of all time. The sense of isolation, the atmosphere, the freaky monster designs and just straight out everything good about a movie from pacing to acting.

I find it difficult to classify Dawn of the Dead, The Evil Dead and Aliens as horror but I guess they all share those elements and have moments. It's a shame that the Alien franchise that was so famous for being scary has literally lost all effect on me. I watch it because I think "wow these Xenomorphs are cool" and want a nostalgia hit.

Oh I think the Blob needs some recognition too.

Yup, came to say this. Though the later sequels stink.

I will say In the Mouth of Madness is one of my favorites, not sure if it's technically more of a thriller anyway.

In addition to these I also recommend Event Horizon, Marebito, The Mothman Prophecies, Night of the Living Dead '68, The Terminator (it's like a slasher), Jacob's Ladder, Hellraiser 1 & 2, and Alice, Sweet Alice.

The exorcist is good, I don't know why but I laugh my ass off through the whole thing. The cell, Candeyman, Hellraiser movies are a good time.

Came to post Suspiria! Everybody check that one out, it's so good. Ditto on Videodrome, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.

Demons aka Demoni is a fun one with a rockin' soundtrack.

If you wish to see a bit different take on horror (psychological drama, touches of black comedy), try The Cremator, a Czechoslovakian cult classic of the inspired New Wave period.

I'm a big fan of House of the Devil. The Innkeepers is cool as well. Both are directed by Ty West. The Innkeepers is fun for me because it was filmed in my neighboring town :)

Jacob's Ladder. The first time I had watched this movie, I was blown away at how many influences Silent Hill borrowed from it. It's one of the best horror movies ever and really disturbing. The Thing is another that is superb, with some really great practical special effects (no CGI here!) that look incredible for the time.

Jacobs Ladder is really scary so is Suspiria.

 

Of newer movies I thought Insidious, The Conjuring

and Winchester were not that bad.
