Question About Implementing Dry Fire For Chain Gun

I've been adding the dry fire sounds back to the game using this tutorial:

The problem is with doing the chaingun. There are a couple different ways that would be acceptable: the gun runs out of ammo and winds down, or the gun continues to rotate but doesn't fire. The problem is that I can get neither of these outcomes: as soon as it runs out of ammo, it abruptly stops the barrel animation. I'm not real knowlegable about working with the script files, but would anyone know how to implement this?
