It's really simple. When scientits want to research the brain they work with test subjects and they aren't picked randomly, that selection always depends on what and who they want to research. If a scientist wants to research the brain of transexuals and compare it to the brain of heterosexuals and homosexuals he must precisely pick these type of test subjects, like it says there:

"In the present study, 42 brains of patients were analyzed (for an overview see Table 1). The brains of 34 reference subjects (9 presumed heterosexual males, 9 homosexual males, 10 presumed heterosexual females, and 6 male-to-female transsexuals)".

How do you think the scientists can know the brains they are going to research belonged to heterosexuals, homosexuals and transexuals? In the case of heterosexuals and homosexuals the scientists need to talk to them personally first and ask their sexual orientation and in the case of transexuals they had to talk to them too or at least have access to information that provides proof they had surgery.

Whoever wishes to confirm this research has to do the same.

When you want to test the predictive power of their test you have a team select appropriate brains and label them in a non-identifying way. Then you have another team do the work and work out classifications based on the diagnostic being used. Then you check the classification against what was already known about the brains. Simple (you know, aside from all the complex lab work and the rigor of doing statistical analysis correctly...).
