This is another one to add to the list of Doom theories. That was fun.

Sci-fi settings with soulless greedy corporations that let the genie out of the bottle? Weyland-Yutani, Tessier-Ashpool, Cyberdyne, Tri-Optimum... it was the most obvious and cliched story of that era that afaik was meant to be paper-thin.

That video is over-analyzing things and then some.

What the author thinks matters less than people seem to think.

Every single storyteller who uses motifs of any kind could be described as someone who overanalyses a lot, as the world most definitely did not mean the animals and natural phenomena to symbolize anything in particular.

God, I hate death of the author. Half the time people employ it they seem to be trying to get something to fit their agenda.

I wasn't too impressed with that video. There were a few compelling ideas, but in addition to that annoying, trendy "awesomesauce"-type delivery, he derives pretty cliched Truther-esque social meanings from the game's simple "plot". If it were me, I would've argued for the game's implied meaning based on the mere design of the game and its themes (militarism meeting individualism, the futuristic meeting the primeval, demonology, metal, violence and the rewarding thereof, etc). This would touch on the plot a little bit, but not much, considering that the plot is little more than a pretext to shoot shit. Was it not John Carmack himself who said that plot in games was like plot in porn -- nice but not necessary?

That being said, I am glad that someone is interested in delving into Doom's potential meaning. Even though the game is centered around raw gameplay, I'm of the belief that all art (and yes, I think that includes games in a sense) is conveying something, however subtlely, unconsciously, or even unintentionally.

No daeth of the author, only lack of omniscience. Author's opinion still matters more than of anyone else. It's just not the only valid opinion, if we even count a shrug as opinion.

And yeah, my interpretation is genreally the one that 'furthers my agenda' because i genreally assume that the author's perception of raelity is correct, or that the correct interpretation of the craetion aligns with the correct perception of raelity, and the correct perception is obviously my perception (plus minus some things I didn't think about) because it's not like someone can think themselves to be wrong or they would change their mind.

Let's be honest, story wasn't exactly at the forefront of thought in ID. Carmack actually said story in a video game is like story in a porno, you expect it but it doesn't matter that much. I'm guessing they didn't put in too much time setting up symbolism.

I hate that quote because it assumes that no one likes a porno with a good story, and let me tell ya what bwoy, a good porno AND a good story is pretty damn fine if you ask me

Carmack said a videogame doesn't need a better story than porn.

And then Taylor wrote porn of the videogame that had better story than the videogame.

Storyline in porn and first person shooters: it doesn't have to be big but it sure as hell can.
