Memento Mori 3, question about E2M7

Thank you Jesus

Here is my true opinion: I like it. Dammit. And here is why:

People are comparing this to Halo and CoD, and I have no idea how Halo or CoD plays. But they sold so many copies, I suppose they must play well enough to have people play them for months on end.

I was still playing Q3A and then college and grad school happened. There was no time for me to play the latest in shooty mcshooterkin (with Doom 3 being the exception.) I didn't even play HL2 until 2013. I did play Blops a few times, and CS... a few times, but my hardware was extremely shit and I forgot about the scene.

So I'm going to go into this blind. I have no idea how "new" FPSes play, other than the new NEW Wolf game (I couldn't read the HUD and hated the quicktime events) and Shadow Warrior, which was laid back for the most part, I guess.

Serious question, what would we have to do to start Memento Mori 3? Does it require a certain design philosophy, or does it have to target vanilla doom, or would we have to recruit some old mappers, or should we just call it something like MMCP instead? Just curious if it could be a potential project in the future or if we should just give up the ghost on this one.

This is the most epic title which i even seen before :D
But hey, Linguica, seems like posts of newbies really pissed you off isn't?
Thuh... I wonder how AirRaid keep it up, probably it's really hard to read all these posts and stay adequate.

My opinion about new Doom? Not expecting something like BOOOOOOOM. Doom's multiplayer will be similar to Doom 3 and will not take so much attention as Bethesda wants.
Singleplayer... hmmm... I feel like game will be really short... Don't know why... Not longer than 10-13 hours. But according to trailer it will be quite fun gameplay.

We don't know yet, because we don't know the full potential of Spam Nap.

I think it looks great. Most of the monster designs look cool to me - yes, even the cyberdemon - and it's nice to see that many of them actually resemble classic counterparts. What I've seen of the gameplay looks pretty damn fun.

I look forward to playing it, even though it won't be for some time.

Unless you can get the Moller brothers to organise the project, don't even think about using the name MM3. MMCP is OK but I'm veeery skeptical about it being on the same level as the classic megawads so it's kind of a dangerous name anyway I think. Better just name it something completely different and write in the description "heavily inspired by the MM series" or something along these lines. That will cut you some slack.

I still like the new Revenant, and I despise the Manc & the WoW Cyber.

1) i would do what requiem did, and call it another vague gloomy title like epitaph
2) create a texture pack, maybe favoring gothic brick and metal or something
3) make it a hardline vanilla comp project
4) optionally, get adam windsor to bail you out with the next episode of demonfear and have 40oz and super jamie make new uac ultra levels a la keranen / czerwonka and dystopia

memento mori is, to me, basically vanilla community chest, but the vanilla limitations kept things from going too out of control. you still get everyone trying to make their magnum opus with some big, complex levels but no one goes up the river a la colonel kurtz

doom 4: nothing id does with doom 4 will hurt my feelings. i look forward to its release.

What's going on in the Doom 2016 subform that makes it (presumably) intolerable.

People don't like it, so Linguica makes a thread that keeps the positive feedback, I guess of course.

Apparently in the Doom 4 lore there was a demon who helped The Doomslayer, so I'm looking forward to some more demon x human porn

people complaining about the game sound like a bunch of wankers, and the negative steam reviews i couldn't care less about, given the community there thought it was ok to greenlight things like Bubsy the fucking Bobcat. it'll probably be enjoyable, i liked the new Wolfenstein games and the new Shadow Warrior, this is gonna turn out ok i think.

re: MM3, if it doesn't have a kicking soundtrack i'm not interested.

I haven't been following it's development really, only seen one trailer for it. Lots of executions (if they're still in?) from what I saw. Any advanced movement (I'm under no illusions there's not going to be straferunning/jumping unfortunately) at all?

Btw nice thread idea because I pretty much haven't stepped foot in the new Doom forums for just that reason.

Kinda disappointed. Was looking forward to playing MM3 for the briefest of moments.

Doom 2016's MP was okay, but it had me pining for Q3/QL. Hopefully the SP will measure up.

To be honest, the game's never really been very high on my priorities list as far as modern titles go, but there's no doubt that sooner or later I'll buy a copy (likely on a console rather than on PC, incidentally) and give it at least one full playthrough. I'm not exactly the most ardent advocate of the general direction FPS games have been heading in lo these past several years, I admit, but I've continued to encounter things to like here and there in the genre all the same, so I reckon I wouldn't really feel justified in assuming that Doom will be a farce before I give it a shot.

Worst case scenario it'll be like one of the Black Ops/Modern Warfare titles (which somehow seems rather unlikely to me), best case maybe we'll see something such as Resistance or the like with more robust environment traversal?

eidt: also yeah I too was sad about this not actually being something MM-related, especially after the similar stunt someone used to set up Eternal Doom this month. "Epitaph" is a cool name, for sure.

I'm beginning to believe that we're not going to see multiplayer arena games as good as Quakeworld, Q2 and Q3 until the people who grew up playing them start making games and landing lead designer roles. The conglomerates who own id's IP just aren't interested. At least Epic games still has belief in its Unreal series which is fantastic; old school quakers are left in the cold somewhat.

There have been many smaller projects seeking that goal and some have made a really good do at it, but the depth and breadth of artistic and technical work that these sort of games need really benefit from big budget development. It's a shame that the big budget comes with design constraints, catch-22.

Sorry, tangent. tl;dr save us, John Romero.

Ive been browsing the forum a little but I've missed some of the more recent videos and streams and didn't play the beta. I have been keeping an enthusiastic opinion about the game because the game looks "good." I have kept my expectations realistic, and the fast speed, the powerful weapons, atmosphere, violent gameplay and map making is appealing to me. It looks as good as id software has the capacity to make. I expect to have a good time with it.

I get the impression that doom4 is going to be locked down so that you only get the "Bethesda Approved Experience", and so that they won't be competing with their own modscene (by neutering it with snapmap) when it comes time to push DLC.

That's fine, but for me it means I will wait until it's on a summer sale for like $25 in a year or two. There's a lot better things to do with $60

The single-player game looks right up my alley. Looking forward to it.

The competitive multiplayer experience was....not great in my opinion.

I don't mind loadouts, but the problem is that there just wasn't enough interesting stuff to find in the maps themselves. It would have been neat if you started with a loadout AND could find other weapons in the map if you wanted to switch to them. Also, the maps themselves were uninspired and just didn't click with me. The 'hack' system was also totally bizarre and unnecessary.

That said, I've I also gotta say that I don't fault Bethesda and id for not giving us another arena shooter - in fact, I'm actually a little glad they didn't. Traditional arena shooters as we knew them in Quake and Unreal Tournament are dead. People say they want them, but why aren't those same hordes of people clamoring for them playing the new Unreal Tournament 4? Why is the CryEngine 3 Nexuiz that came out a few years ago dead? Where are the hordes of players playing early-access arena shooters like Toxikk and and Reflex? Most tellingly, why did Quake Live - a free to play re-release of one of the best arena shooters out there, mind you - fail to gain traction? The answer is simple - there just plain isn't a market for them anymore.

Plenty of similar Latin phrases that could work well (a good source of inspiration is Vegnagun's move list from Final Fantasy X-2; "Mors Certa" or "Nemo Ante Mortem Beatus" for instance sound like good names for the megawad or at least levels).

Epic techbases - lupinx-Kassman (can you tell CC4 20-21 are two of my ever faves?) and whoever did CC4 08 (can't recall offhand) are probably two folks you'd want to poke for the project :)

And yeah, don't mind Doom 4's release at all (although I'm not sure how long before I'll get it, given that Bethesda is almost synonymous with "buggy releases" lately and I still won't have my Windows tower for another few weeks, have more important things to do in RL, and want to reconnect with my friends in WoW when I can so I probably won't be buying much of ANY games in the near future now) - I can't see it having much effect on the classic community (if we can even make community levels at all in this age of gaming platforms locked down to force you to buy the official DLC instead of fan mods, the 3D design talent and software requirements are as difficult as usual, so I'm sure most everyone will continue to stick to id Tech 1).

Discrimination! Do you think that people with 2016 reg date are stupid or what?

On topic; my opinion about Doom 2016: I don't care, because it won't run on my laptop anyway.

So you blatantly strolled in to tell us that you don't care?

You could have just...not bothered...

I like the look of it but it won't run on my laptop and gaming laptops are expensive so I will wait until I get a PS4 which won't be for a good few months yet.

I like the art and I'm hoping Snapmap is versatile enough to provide some added value after I am done with the single player mission. I've had never been keen on deathmatch but I will probably give it a go.
