Has anyone tried a scientific explanation of Heretic's objects?

Recommended Posts

Like it has been done with Doom 2's bestiary on doom2.net, has anyone tried coming up with plausible scientific explanations on how the "magic" elements from Heretic work? Stuff like the staves, wands, fire maces or even the enemies (e.g. the disciples). I'm pretty sure that anything that's "magic" will eventually be scientifically modelled and reproduced.

Since Heretic is sadly far less popular than Doom, I doubt it. Does Heretic even have a site anymore?

This would seem like a futile exercise in missing the point.

Heretic is a Doom-style game in a fantasy setting; taking away the fantasy aspect to try to sperg out some way in which you could explain as "scientifically plausible" the morph ovum or the ethereal crossbow sounds to me kinda like trying to explain that the demons in Doom are actually actors in monster suits.

Heretic & Hexen are in another universe entirely. Maybe what's possible there isn't here, and vice-versa.

There are some tough ones. Try explaning monsters turning into chicken and then back to their original form. Maybe in the Heretic world all living beings are actually descendants of chicken. When you are exposed to a certain smell, the ancient instincts awake and they are so strong that your DNA insntantly mutates and your whole body transforms. But after 40 seconds you manage to regain consciousness, you suppress your instincts and the DNA quickly mutates back.

Yeah...

btw, until now I didn't know that Heretic also has Super Chicken... http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Morph_Ovum

Don't midochlorian this, it's meant to be completely fictional in nature. You can explain how it works but trying to make Scientific sense of this will only make it worse.

Chaos Device.

No, it doesn't actually teleport anyone anywhere. In reality there are always two Corvuses in the level but one of them wears an invisible cloak (there is probably an explanation of these somewhere in science fiction so I'm skipping this part) and stays at the starting point. When the active Corvus uses the Chaos Device, he quickly opens it, takes another invisible cloak from the inside and puts it on so it looks like he disappeared. Meanwhile, the inactive Corvus takes his cloak off and goes to fight.

in fantasy-themed games like Heretic, i always viewed magic as being another source of power that just comes naturally to it, like how electricity, gravity etc. are things that exist here. just exactly how it works, i don't know: it's probably have to do with magical energy being able to transform your thoughts and feelings into power, and you can direct that power outwards in different ways. that's about as deep as i care to think about it in a "logical" way: if you think it's worth grumbling about how an artifact can turn people into chickens, then you might wanna think about something else.
