How do you cook white rice well? Everytime I make it, it always comes out too mushy.

1. Boil water on the stove
2. Add rice when water is boiling, usually 2 parts water to 1 part rice
3. Let it sit in boiling water for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
4. Lower the temperature, let the rice sit in warm water to simmer for 20 minutes

Then i check on it if the water is absorbed. I'm not that great about exact measurements so sometimes the water is boiled away before the rice is fully cooked, or there's a little too much water. It's probably not a good idea to add more water or drain it so late into the cooking process, but I do it sometimes so as not to waste the food.

I want my rice to not have any hard chewy bits in the center, but I also don't want it to be fluffy like mashed potatoes. Just some nice hearty grains. Sometimes I get it out of random circumstance but most of the time I mess it up.

Take some rice in a pot and pour water. Wash the rice. Then replace the water.
The ratio between the rice and water should be something like 1:3-4.

Put the pot of rice and water on the stove at full flame. Leave it like this. When the water seems to have been mostly gone(little holes with bubbles coming out), lower the flame to a minimum and cover the pot with a lid. Leave it like this until the water has finally run out.

I never measure the time taken. Its like instinct:you just know.

A Ever since starting loading trucks at UPS I stopped exercising. My 3 trucks run through the industrial section of town so I end up lifting thousands of pounds worth of packages every day. I'm way stronger now than when I was actually working out on a schedule in the Air Force.

A Actually I'm kinda shocked that I'm able to live as cheaply as I do. My only real complaint with costs is how dame expensive a month's worth of food is.

Is it more or less economical to use public transportation compared to owning a car?

If you account for the costs of owning a vehicle a month:

1. Payments
2. Insurance
3. Fuel
4. Maintenance (oil changes, cleaning, wiper blades, lights, etc.)
5. Annual Inspection (divide by twelve for each month)
6. Annual Vehicle Registration (divide by twelve for each month)
7. Unexpected costs (accidents, breakdowns, etc., budget a realistic number)

vs.

1. Train/Bus/Cab fare each work day
2. Time (if you can put a number value on it)


I'm not entirely sure how to estimate the costs ahead of time. I guess I'd have to try it one day and assume it will always cost that much. I'm just curious if people use public transportation regularly for their work commutes. I hate driving sometimes and it seems relaxing to sit on a bus or train and read or listen to music before going to work.

Transportation also is dependent on where you live versus where you work. For example, working in a major city means the cost of living will likely be radically more expensive in all ways as opposed to commuting in from somewhere outside the city. It also really depends on what you drive (practical vs impractical). Here's my take on pub transit vs car

Commute: 50ish km
pub transit -> 1 hour 30 minutes (provided no problems)
driving -> average of 45-50 minutes if you follow the speed limits and traffic allowing. Worst time has been 1.5 hours, best time has been 34 minutes.

cost:
pub transit -> roughly 27 dollars/day
driving -> roughly 18 dollars/day

monthly cost for car: 145 for insurance.

pub transit costs > more than $3/bus ride, limited routes, lot of walking involved for basic needs.

Having lived with and without vehicles, I can safely say I'd never go without. Pub transportation is unreliable, dirty, disgusting, obnoxious, and annoying to me. Driving saves a LOT of time that can be put towards other things. Time is extremely valuable.

This is one thing I can do really well. Here's fraggle's guide to making good rice:

1. Buy good rice, not cheap crap. It makes a big difference. Tilda are an example of good rice. Get basmati rice. If you're worried about the price, you can usually buy big (~15kg) bags of good rice if you go to the right supermarkets - that'll help you save on the cost.

2. Wash the rice before you cook it. You want to get a lot of the starch off it before you cook it. You can just do this in the same saucepan you use to cook it. Pour some water in and sort of "knead" (don't know how to best describe it) the rice. You'll notice the water gets really cloudly from the starch that comes off. Pour off the water and repeat until the water is mostly clear, then you're ready to cook it.

3. Put rice in saucepan with some fresh water. You want to get the right amount of water to cook it just right. My rule of thumb is to have about 1 cm of water covering the rice - you can put your fingertip in the water to judge how much water is in there, it makes a useful measuring stick.

4. Turn on the heat and boil off all the water. Don't put the lid on the saucepan if it has one. The end result should be to have a saucepan full of cooked rice with little to no water left, and you shouldn't need to strain it off. Don't turn off the heat too early or get scared if it sizzles a bit at the end. If in doubt stick a fork in there and you can reassure yourself it's not burning or anything.

If you still struggle then buy a rice cooker and it will basically take care of 3 and 4 for you. Hope this helps.

Including oil changes, brakes including calipers on the front, pads, and rotors, I have done front ball joints, shocks all around, did a radiator coolant flush once, fuel filter change, installed aftermarket exhaust and intake myself. I agree with Fraggle's 1 and 2 - get basmati, and wash it, can't empahsise the "wash it" enough, makes all the difference. But I would cook it in freshly boiled water, rather than cold. The amount of water is a key detail - it should be enough to cover, and then go above the rice by a small, but not insignificant, amount - how small and not insignificant will depend on the quantity of rice; on average it should at least cover your fingertip (if the rice comes out a bit sticky then put a bit less water in). Then put a lid on the pan and turn the gas to around two-thirds of the way to maximum and ignite. After around 4-5 minutes most of the water above the rice will have boiled off, and the surface of the rice will have lots of little craters. At this point, turn the gas very low - like really low. Let the rice cook like this for a further 7 minutes or so. then kill the heat and leave it to stand for 5 minutes. I like to cook rice with either coconut milk or cinnamon bark, for flavour.

Sounds like we're 90% in agreement and the remaining 10% is stuff I don't have a strong opinion on. I agree abut leaving it to stand though - that extra time for the remaining moisture to evaporate off really helps.

-I rent my house. It's small but I feel it's a great value for the money.
-I have a neighbor who is nice enough, but he's the most boring person and talks too much.
-Bills are always paid but I certianly don't have much to spare. Still in a traineeship so the wage is somewhat low.

-A clean house feels nice, so I try to keep it relatively clean, but if it's messy I don't freak out or anything, I just wait til I (and the missus) have the energy to clean.
-I don't get enough cardiovascular exercise in, I lift a bit of weights though.
-I had an idea that coming by money meant pissing away 70% of your life to "the man". I came to accept that frustrating fact before I was even employed, but the idea is to get high enough up that the money is at least worth the time.

I was taught in childhood that the government is in charge of legislation and allocation of tax dollars, so it's always been something that's interested me. Even when it's frustrating or depressing, I always try to stay politically informed.
-Doom is still appealing, but I miss out on 99% of new releases and modern smash hits. I frankly just don't have the time between work, home life, and how much more fun Doom is than any of them anyway.

It depends a lot on which city you live in whether public transport, car or bike is best. I know in Minneapolis biking is a popular mode of commuting, while In LA, car is king and in Boston The T (subway) is best. In Boston, it's much cheaper to take public transport. Boston has a monthly pass you can get for the train that costs the same amount as one month of auto insurance. So of all the expense of owning a car, you can commute for the price of just one single auto expenses. As far as time, it's still cheaper to take public transport as in many cities the public transport can be just as fast or faster than sitting in gridlock traffic. This is definitely true of Boston.

Is it more or less economical to use public transportation compared to owning a car?

If you account for the costs of owning a vehicle a month:

1. Payments
2. Insurance
3. Fuel
4. Maintenance (oil changes, cleaning, wiper blades, lights, etc.)
5. Annual Inspection (divide by twelve for each month)
6. Annual Vehicle Registration (divide by twelve for each month)
7. Unexpected costs (accidents, breakdowns, etc., budget a realistic number)

vs.

1. Train/Bus/Cab fare each work day
2. Time (if you can put a number value on it)


I'm not entirely sure how to estimate the costs ahead of time. I guess I'd have to try it one day and assume it will always cost that much. I'm just curious if people use public transportation regularly for their work commutes. I hate driving sometimes and it seems relaxing to sit on a bus or train and read or listen to music before going to work.

A Pfft, a lot man, like, probably 8-12 if not more because I work from home and the gaming/beat making stuff can eat up a lot of time too.

A Washing the dishes can be meditative. It feels very satisfying--spiritually satisfying, even--to get really nasty and dirty by cleaning your house, then to take a nice shower.

A Exercise for me is usually taking long walks, lifting a few weights, aggressively drumming (if you're fast and loud, you will wear yourself the fuck out, I'm tellin' ya), some calisthenics, stretching, etc. That might take up an hour a day or so, and I would say I exercise most days.

A I'm 31, but I'm still trying to transition into that whole "making my own money" thing. I've received financial support my entire life. Maintaining a job has always been an awkward, scary, confusing thing for me and I've sort of settled into the freelance home business thing as a desperate attempt to create a form of employment I feel I can handle...Ssssooooo long story short, I'll answer that question when my business takes off (and goddammit it better!).

A I'm apolitical. I learn bits and pieces about what's going on but don't feel compelled to align to any particular faction or persuasion. I don't feel particularly affected, but I think that's largely because I'm unaware of what's going on.

A I find myself feeling a disconnect from contemporary games, I think because the otherworldly nature of old school 3D and pixel art, along with the low-fidelity music, created something that wasn't quite animation, cinema, theater, storybook. It was something very different. Now games and everything else kinda are bleeding into each other, so its like super normalized now. I guess that kinda kills a lot of the magic. So I primarily play older games, games I grew up with or new ones I discover, or sometimes a random Newgrounds game that has a retro feel.

one, I'v had 6. I buy used from criagslist, I check the cars myself for rust, frame damage and over all condition of the car. I do not buy new no matter what.

Rent, fucking loathe my neighbors (who scream and yell at all and every hour of the day. it being summer means the kids are doing it too). Nope, eating salad at work because I work nights. One car, get my car serviced, 20 or so minutes. Coworkers are great, single, love cats. I'm never NOT on the computer, cleaning the house is decently ok, yes, about a month ago, and yes.

I'm only 21, it's too early for me to adult.

Own. Barely see them, and never hear them. I don't know how to answer that. Not cooking. One (each). Serviced (though I do top up the wiper fluid myself to make sure it's the -30 stuff). I drive everywhere nowadays, if not flying. The time it takes to walk down the stairs. No. Yes. N/A. Yes. No. None. N/A. Two awesome cats. Most of the time I am awake. Not very. Variable: a lot in the ski season; limited otherwise. Never thought about it. Since I first understood what politics were. Not vastly. A few months (LED bulb in kitty night light in bathroom).
