It was apparently an inspiration from Club Car's golf cart and partly a response to the 1970s fuel crisis.

It seemed to ended up as an electric cheese wedge and had chromosomes out of whack.

Cars made in the late 80s / 90s that come stock standard with shitty unreliable parts all seem to have this trademark shitbox hatchback look to them. Even when they were brand new, they looked like piles of cheap junk.

Yugos may be some of the worst cars ever made, but they have too much generic 80s hatchback look to be really ugly. Not saying they look good; they're just sort of forgettable.

Those Yugos are starting to fetch money on the retro car scene due to their rarity and the fact that they are pretty terrible. I think for ugly cars you need to look at modern french cars, specifically peugeot- the french had some beautiful cars out in the sixties right through to the eighties/early nineties, but about 15 years ago they just lost the plot. Have a feeling tougher pedestrian impact testing and other safety concerns have influenced smaller car designs
