weak sauce but fun moster ideas

Recommended Posts

when asked what the best monster is we usually gravitate towards the badasses in the bestiary, things like mancubuses and cybers, but the concensus among the mappers is that the weak but unespectedly versatile imp is the best monster. what kinds of lowly grunts do you think it would be cool to have in the bestiary?

i'll start

sacrifice doll: a monster with imp level health that can sacrifice to resurrect any non boss monster. the resurrected monster will only have the amount of health that the sacrifice doll had left. if there is no dead monster around than it will resort to a projectyle attack that is a bit faster and weaker than the imps

A zombie similar to Quake's: undying unless gibbed.

Man, what I a reaction I had after seeing it didn't die for the second time.

Of course for a Doom low tier enemy, and for it to be gibbed, it might have to have very low health, like 5.

A melee only monster twice as fast as a Pinky Demon but dealing less damage per hit and having no more health than a Zombieman.
Stationary turret slowly but repeatedly firing Arachnotron plasma and dying in one regular shotgun blast.
A flying monster throwing slow projectiles and having slightly less health than the abovementioned turret.

It would be cool to have a monster with a strong melee attack that doesn't have very much health, but is really fast and has 0 pain chance, so that the only way to stop it is to kill it, and if it reaches you, you're doomed. Kinda like a better version of the demon.
Srsly, why there are no monsters who have 0 pain chance in original games? The idea of non-staggering monster is not really hard to come up with.

A tiny arch-vile-fast flying revenant with a small almost impossible to hit hitbox and 1 dmg homing missiles.

I had a crappy idea for a monster which drains armor but not health unless the armor is gone.

A hell knight HP'd enemy that shoots 5 crawling imp-strength fireballs in 3 angles that you can get around by making a strafe dance between the projectile swarms.

A monster with infinite health that does 0 damage. It only shows up when a randomly generated W1 linedef is triggered. When it shows up, it's only for a second in the form of a screamer. It's like a ghost monster. The only effect it has on you is that it disables your weapons for ten seconds. That, and will have you on the edge of your seat, never knowing when or if you're going to get freaked the fuck out, because sometimes there can be one trigger, multiple triggers, or no triggers. All random.

A monster with as much HP as a pinky that is a big head with legs. He has no attacks, but when he spots you, he runs away and starts screaming, alerting other monsters.

A malfunctioning robot enemy with reverse infighting logic: If you shoot it, it starts fighting on your side, but if it gets hit by a hostile monster, it turns to fight against you.

A really small but fast enemy that doesn't attack but run from the player.
However, it's carrying that blue keycard you were looking for..

*the Cyberdemons and Barons in the next room flood in where Doomguy is*
Doomguy: HOLY SHIT!

A "thief" kind of monster that doesn't attack, but can pick up items and only releases them if killed. It wouldn't move with the usual seek/attack code of the other monsters, who simply try and close the distance between them and Doomguy, but it would kinda "stick around" Doomguy (not too close, not too far), and steal any nearby pickups whenever possible. When a pickup was stolen, it would then try to keep as far from Doomguy as possible. As a variation, it could have a "steal attack" where it would deal some skull-like damage, and randomly "steal" an item from Doomguy's inventory.

Could be made extra-annoying it is fast, small, and could fly. Of course, it could cause maps to become unwinnable if it picked up e.g. a keycard and then got killed inside an inaccessible area. Or it could be exploited to pick things you normally could not.

An arch-vile, but the monsters it resurrects are broken in some way; move slower, projectiles slower and weaker, or hitscan guns jam some proportion of the time... their ambient sound is sometimes/often replaced with their pain sound instead.

Throw in some graphics/frame glitches too, and you have some fine creepypasta material right there. A map full of crippled, suffering, agonizing monsters....

That could actually be done by running a randomizer on resurrected monsters, affecting factors such as health, frame durations, damage, etc. The randomizer would be chosen in such a way that most changes would have a negative impact and cripple the monster, but leave some margin for a monster to come out e.g. a bit tougher or faster. Also, the more times a specific monster is resurrected, the more negative the impact should be.

A monster that hides from you, and lays mines.
A bird that bites you, and grabs you and carries you away unless you scare it with a gun blast.
Something that bites your leg and slows down your movement.

A shambler that just runs towards you yelling "aaaaaaaaaaaaah" and blows up. Quake's answer to Serious Sam.

Literally ghosts, they don't damage or scream at you, but they sure will make you jump. They can't be hit by anything.

A monster that can randomly open up teleportation portals in front of it to redirect projectiles, sometimes towards the one that fired them in the first place (IE you). I actually got the idea from Janemba.
