Great I feel so much better about my thing being labeled as trash now that you clarified I'm not supposed to feel bad.

Your map doesn't compare to the map that crapped out on Joel *TWICE* (part 1, part 8) on stream, leading into him having to noclip out in utter frustration. No offense.

There was only like 10 or less maps that relied heavily on memes, and that's out of 189.

Kind of rude to come in and start plugging a map and saying everything else was crap.

Well I apologize for that, it's just that I watched only the first (or second?) stream where this map was, was instantly amazed, then scrolled through the other maps and they were meh. + a lot of maps had vinesauce logos in them and associated stuff that I don't even understand, because people relied on IRL/outside stuff that isn't even Doom.

Exactly, you aren't supposed to feel bad, because I don't even know if I saw your map or not :) Most likely not, because I'd remember the name.
Anyway, edited my previous post so that it's more obvious what I meant.

guys relax and read his question more properly. imo he never insulted anyone or their maps except of the few he saw (and since nobody else knows which map they were, nobody should feel insulted).

btw. is there a list with all maps played? I send in a modified AVJ map and I am wondering if he plays it xD

Whoever was plodding enough to watch the full 50+ hours of gameplay, has there been anything comparable in epicness to this level?
Because I looked at few streams and the maps [that I've seen] were memes and utter trash, no offense to the people involved intended.

Yes, my map. If he didn't god mode at the instant he saw an ArchVile he'd get to appreciate the small details all over the place more.

I very nearly didn't catch my WAD, since I had to go for a blood test, but that was over with quickly and I caught up to the stream a short while before he fired up my submission, so I was thankfully present in the chat to save him when he messed up a couple of times. :P

Very glad he dug the concept and found it fun - it's a dumb gimmicky premise and the whole "escort mission" thing is divisive for many, I think.

There were a couple of points where he "broke" the map, i.e. making a somewhat impossible jump onto a ledge in the cave, which shouldn't really be doable as it's definitely an outright sequence break - and later on, shunting Violet into a corner and then accidentally drinking her last bit of health which stopped him from getting her across an electric floor (I had to tell him to type "summon medikit" in the console in order to progress).

But I'm happy he finally played and enjoyed it, and that's fine. Won't be too fussed if someone more deserving gets one of the rewards, of course.

Also, thumbnail! That's pretty sweet. :D

I know most people don't care, but I haven't given feedback because my PC has been out of commission. I have, however, been enjoying the streams on my tablet. Haven't had a chance to see this one, but I'm so glad that this community has gotten a lot more exposure and variety through this contest. I hope the winners are deserving!

Oh awesome, he used my map for the thumbnail haha :D

I'll be sure to watch the VOD for Mech's map and Hardcore's map. :)

Just watched the stream, and I'm having a hard time finding the wads in the stream. I can't find yours anywhere, even though I found a .txt file with the description. Would you mind uploading it somewhere? It was pretty awesome just from the looks of it.

I've yet to publish the map publicly. It's something on my to-do list. When I do I'll drop a link here in this thread! :)

There should be time stamp links in the top comments.

For some reason when he get's violet on the nukage and starts panicking calling jimmy's name cracks me up

To tell you the truth it was really fun to see a constant stream of wads. It's to bad that joel sounds too burned out of doom, otherwise i was hoping to even enter the next contest.

See if you can get in contact with him. I mean I've tried to through e-mail and chat and even over Discord and he can be hard to get ahold of, but if your submission was definitely not played over the course of any of the 9 streams, that's something that needs to be brought to Joel's attention.

They mean links to the playable wads, not links to each wad's section of the video. :)

EDIT: I need to take the time to watch Jimmy's mod in the VOD at some point, sounds pretty hilarious to see :)

well what would be the outcome? he might say sorry, but that is all. for sure he wont do a 10th part just for 1 level...

It's worth noting that some levels were deleted because they failed to obey the contest rules. During the first stream I remember one of the mods responsible for peaking at the levels saying that dozens were removed.

Hello Doomworld, First and foremost I want to express my utmost gratitude that you've shown interest in my competition, its an honor to have my contest graced by veterans and members alike on this legendary forum. I also cannot stress enough how grateful I am for your patience throughout this.

Which leads me to the second thing; I'd like to apologize for my clumsy management of time throughout this. I did not expect over 150 entries, and managing 6 hours or so each stream was more difficult than I imagined it would be. It was my first time running a competition like this and I've learned a lot, ranging from settling on ONE engine, not two, more restrictions on length of levels and to make sure that whatever GZDoom version we're running isn't incompatible with eachother.

I'm blown away that there was so many amazing submission, judging from newbies taking their first crack at this, inside jokey light hearted wads to custom levels done with surgical precision. There was everything in-between.

I'm currently in the process of selecting a winner and writing up a document tonight, I'll try to post it here ASAP.

Thanks again for reading, and thanks AGAIN for showing an interest in my streams and competition, you guys rule thank you.

Hey man, thanks a lot for taking the time to post here! I don't think anyone expected the contest to be so huge honestly, but it's really great that you gave Doom / Doom modders exposure with your streams, which were pretty damn hilarious by the way. It's always awesome when someone with a big name decides to share the love and have some fun. Thanks again!

Oh hi Joel. I have my biases and favourites and some contributions seemed in a league of their own, but I honestly don't envy you the task of having to pick the winners, heh. That was quite a marathon, so mad props to you for enduring it!

Yo Joel, thanks for stopping by man :D

Good luck with sorting through all of those submissions, I can't imagine trying to come up with winners (there were many awesome submissions). I enjoyed the hell out of the streams too, and it was great to see so many people interested in making maps. I honestly thought you did a great job with streaming all of them considering you had over 150 submissions (some with more than 1 map...that's an insane amount of content to play through).

I hope you'll do another contest later this year (I'll certainly enter it again!). I think your popularity really got a lot of people interested in creating stuff for the contest, and that's always good. If you do another contest, I have just a couple of suggestions to make, if that's ok.

- Consider keeping it to one map only (for your sanity). I bet that if you do another contest, you might get even more submissions than the first. Also single maps in Doom can potentially be HUGE, so its not always necessary to include more maps.
- If you say "make it compatible with GZDoom", then just about anything someone makes will run in that port. ZDoom is essentially the same except that it lacks a hardware renderer; so anything made in ZDoom will work in GZDoom. The exception to this is that sometimes you'll need to grab a dev version of GZDoom (you can get those HERE).
- I dunno if this is feasible considering how the wad submission system worked, but it might be a good idea to allow the submissions to include a readme file. That way the author can let you know if a map does or doesn't allow jumping, requires certain compatibility options, etc. Sadly I didn't get to watch you stream my map (I was sleeping like a little baby) so I wouldn't have been able to let you know that my map didn't allow jumping (thankfully it didn't come up in your playthrough). I'm sure the same situation popped up for other authors too.

If you ever need help or advice for another contest, there are a lot of really cool folks here that will be more than willing to help you out. So don't hesitate to stop by and ask ;)

thanks for doing this contest joel. you've pretty much actively expanded the doom community, and i really think that's awesome. the contest has introduced so many people to doom, and now there's so many more maps that we can add to the /idgames archive. not only that, but you've also motivated and inspired many people to create even more content outside this contest. personally, i think that's awesome! :D

btw, love your streams!

Will there be another contest at some point?

I was glad to participate in this contest and be sure to take part in next. There is much to learn from the many authors who created in a short time so cool maps. It is encouraging that in the next competition will be more restrictive. I think they should help smooth the beginners and veterans possibilities. It is good if a set of rules will change slightly with each new competition.

Prominent feature of this competition - it is a wide variety of architecture, visuals and gameplay ideas. I hope that it will not be too limited in the future both on speedmappings (fixed texture-pack or theme). Nevertheless, I think it would be necessary to apply the ban to troll \ abusive content. It's killing the good atmosphere.

I heard, in the last streams you say that are tired of Doom (as far as I allowed my English) and took a break. I thought that it would be necessary to consider the other games as a platform for mapping competition, such as Serious Sam, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood or any other. Although they are unlikely to collect such ammount of members ... :( I have not experience of mapping for one of said game, and if such a contest would be announced, I work like a complete novice. It would be an interesting experience! Most of all I would like to see competition for "Vinesauce Serious Sam Mapping Contest" or "... Half-Life 2 ..." see what I can make from scratch, and then compare with the masters. If you think, this idea is no good, then maybe someone else realize it ...

This competition - a great initiative and I would like to wish you success in the continuation! Hopefully the next time I have to do something with fewer of fatal bugs. ;]

Thanks to you, Joel!

Oh hey, Joel. Thanks heaps for playing through A Boy And His Barrel, I was very anxious to see it get played and judged as my (possibly ill-tempered) posts in this thread might imply. I very much crave criticism, and it's already fueling the upcoming changes to the mod. Your playthrough was very useful to me as well as thoroughly entertaining. :D

Thanks for the opportunity for the contest, as well. Super excited to see who won.

From one avid Doomer and MIDIphile to another, can I say I really dig the content you're putting out. :)
