GZDoom or ZDoom?

Recommended Posts

I just got my new H.P desktop. I think it might not be perfect for playing Doom 2016. But I still got the classics with me.

Can you guys tell which source port should I pick?

GZDoom, ZDoom, Zandronum, Skulltag or any others??

uh, they are free, just download a bunch of them and try them out??? Skulltag is defunct, don't waste your time with it. In addition to the ones you listed, maybe try prboom+ and eternity? Chocolate Doom for vanilla? Ultimately it doesn't really matter unless you want to play with mods or wads with new features. Just get a bunch of ports and you'll be good.

If you're purist use Chocolate Doom. If you want a little more to your vanilla experience try Crispy Doom. If you want even more while still keeping it fairly retro get Doom Retro. If you still like the game for what it is but having the bugs fixed and limits removed PrBoom+ is a solid choice. And then, if you're mod-crazy and want to see what Doom has to truly offer check out G/ZDoom.

I'll throw it out there that if you want a 'near thought-less, most things will run fine' environment, just use GZDoom. Obviously there are numerous ports all giving different experiences, but if you're looking for a source port where you can rest assured that most pwads will work, just go straight to GZDoom.

GZDoom-For running most WADs and Mods successfully.
Zandronum-For playing multiplayer with the features of GZDoom
PrBoom Plus-For speed and demo recording.
Chocolate Doom-For easy-to-use vanilla experience.
3DGE-For "easier modding" with the help of DDF. And for playing CeeJay'd awesome mods.
Eternity-I honestly don't know. Never tried it :P
Odamex-For multiplayer that's like vanilla but more.
DosBox-You guessed it!
D-Touch's engines-For on-the-go Doom.
Crispy Doom-For an enhanced vanilla experience.

(G)ZDoom for (G)ZDoom stuff, Doom Retro for Boom stuff, Crispy for limit-removing/vanilla, Chocolate if you wanna feel the spirit of the 90's.
And ZDaemon if you wanna DM online. Or Zandronum, if you like brewtal doum, hehehe.

For what it is worth, so does Zan. We also run a stats tracking wad on Friday night Fragfest which I'm sure Catastrophe wouldn't mind people adapting for general use (ask him first i guess?)

Marcaek how adaptable is that to be used on a per wad basis? For example, could I make a "Best Times" leader board for Skulldash? More accurately, does it talk to an online database? (MySQL?)

Very exciting and interesting stuff either way!

GZDoom can run in software mode. So this means ZDoom already in GZDoom.

For vanilla/boom wads I use PRBoom-plus
For multiplayer - Zandronum and ZDaemon (via Doom Explorer, multiplayer launcher)

Other than skulltag, maybe all of them? Just try them all and see which one you like. I use three source ports regularly - Eternity, Chocolate Doom, and ZDoom. Eternity is for Boom stuff, Chocolate Doom for Vanilla stuff, and ZDoom for the rest.

GZDoom doesn't work with OpenGLES2 yet, so I'm not running it.

Zdaemon is much better =)

ZDaemon would be better...if it was open source and had a PrBoom-Plus like viddump feature... without at least the first thing, I don't feel like using that port.

Have you considered Odamex? It is open source and while it does not have vid dumping, it does have arguably the best multiplayer demo support.

vid dumping would be a welcome addition if anyone wanted to patch it in though!

Yes, I have considered Odamex. My needs involve coop demo recording. AFAIK, Odamex still isn't quite read for coop usage...not to mention the demo format is liable to change since Odamex isn't 1.0 yet... In theory, ZDaemon has the best multiplayer demo support. It's stable and can run demos from older versions. Too bad about the lack of a viddump feature...or even more importantly, it not being open source.

edit: Here's some reasons i'm not using odamex, and here's some more.

odamex is very nice port. But you can wait on server many hours and nobody connect.
