Making sense out of the Doom 2 levels

Recommended Posts

I know the Doom 2 levels are somewhat abstract, but if we try hard enough, can we plausibly explain what they're trying to represent?

Example:

MAP01 Entryway - This map represents a UAC computer processing facility near the Doomguy's landing site. The blue-floor room with the four Zombiemen and the Green Armor Secret holds four computer units. These are the black pillars that descend into the floor when the button is pressed. After returning to Earth, the Doomguy hopped the fence and found himself on a ledge. Ultimately, the exit button is some type of elevator that brings him down to Underhalls.

Underhalls seems to be some kind of water treatment facility with a couple of bases. Perhaps it's even related to the river in the Entryway, either entering into or exiting from the Underhalls below. The exit could be a different elevator.

The Gantlet: The blue key area is a dam. The red key area is an empty reservoir. The start and exit areas are buildings next to the dam.

The focus: The waste from the filtration of the water from the first 3 maps comes into focus here on its way down to next map, as seen in the sludge pool that is being overlooked by a control area. The crate area contains various equipment for the UAC workers. The end area is an empty reservoir as well.

The Waste Tunnels are connected to the Underhalls. The waste that is seperated from the water in Underhalls goes through here.

The crusher is where sediment from the Underhalls water and Waste Tunnels waste that can't be processed is sent to be crushed into a more easily storable material. Said material is stored in barrels.

Dead Simple seems to be just a Hellish outpost with guards, killing the initial Mancubi guards opening up a swarm of Arachnatrons on the potential intruder.

Tricks and Traps is a normal UAC base taken over and subverted by the presence of the demons who have now made their dens there. The Pain Elemental room could be more tunnels connecting from the previous levels. Areas like the Cacodemon room could have previously housed machinery.
The Baron/Cyberdemon room could have been a toxic pit, now used similarly to a king's hall, with the king (Cyberdemon) looking over his subjects (the Barons). The toxic waste has been affected by the demons' presence, and now the pipes leak a magma-like substance.

The Pit was originally an oil mine site, but once all the oil was mined out, it was repurposed into a trash dump site instead, and the deep mining holes have been completely filled with waste, most of which turned radioactive.

this makes The Pit the most human level ever created

Dead simple is obviously a skateboard park on the top of a parking garage. Or maybe just the rooftop to whatever building earlier levels were inside.

I think Tricks n Traps rather is a hellified car store/factory

Dead simple is a open area that more or less acts as a place for workers to hang out during brakes. However, in the event of an enemy attack, the walls can be raised (the ones that lower after killing the mancubi) and elevators which connect to different sections of the base. The main control panel being located in dead center. It was changed by hell's magic and now the elevators go up to an extent instead of down (the ones the mancubi are on) and the control panel only working on a 5th elevator that leads to the next map.

How can map31 and map32 be explained rationally in the Doom 2 universe?

They can't, they're easter eggs!

HOWEVER, in some weird game it was declared that Doomguy is BJ's descendant, so it might be a vision of some sort? Old memory deep inside Doomguy's genetic code triggered by those ugly CRACKLE textures in the secret exit room of MAP15? Flashbacks?

Hitler secretly visited Doom, and worked with Demon forces to rebuilt his evil Jail there to torture UAC Employees !

In map10 the first few rooms are sewage systems mined underground, all of the empty rooms are where the fuel was stocked in crates, and unfourtunatly all the crates are gone because the last human survivors took most of them into their hideout which is in MAP11's exit room.
The yellow key room is filled with servers and some of them are designed to be opened to be able to operate them, one of the servers has a button that opens up the emergency exit.

The fence in the exit room is especially there because there were usually long queues to get into the elevator.

MAP11 is a jungle pit drowned in a nukage leak and has been modified by humans and later by demons, which is why you can see wooden structures swallowed in by metallic structures, the exit area is a manmade trench, behind the exit button there's the population hostage as mentioned on the text screen afterwards.

It's one of those BDSM things where people dress up as Nazis or something. The hanging Commander Keen is just a piñata, and he's filled with cherry jam.

The Factory is a factory manufacturing crates, currently under reconstruction - all machinery from the old main building was packed into the crates in the small storage building on the south-west, and the old main building was to be demolished and then a new modern building was to be built on its place.

the explanation for map31/map32 is that the the city doom 2 takes place in happens to be in germany, and when you go to the wolfenstein levels, you're actually going through the remains of castle wolfenstein, possessed by reanimated ss guys and demons

I've been waiting for a thread like this!

Map 01 is Server Room 2B, which stuck out of the force field just enough to provide a great entryway for a certain space marine. It's also great because it sits right above the Underhalls.

Map 04 is a subterranean supercomputer called F.O.C.U.S. It's primary purpose is to make sure that all rockets lift off, but since the power is off its pretty much useless.

Map 06 is home to the main power source of the spaceport- the infamous Crusher. The Mastermind uses it to recharge its batteries. Wait- how did you think it keeps those legs moving?

Map 09 is the garbage disposal.

Map 11 was the nuclear power plant, which shares power with the spaceport and the city. When a mysterious creature teleported in, the entire place was flooded with marines before the creature began to summon the rest of the demon gang and corrupting everything.

Maps 31 and 32 are small pockets of Hell for the Nazis to be in, forever guarding Castle Wolfenstein and killing prisoners.

(I've only played about a third of Doom 2 all the way through.)

Map 13 is the downtown of your home city, now completely infested with demons. It contains several UAC warehouses as well as corrupted residential areas.

I know this is a bit forward but I have a rational explanation for Maps 31 and 32. Doom Guy was teleported into the old Nazi Complex where demons took over. Nazis, being evil enough to be deemed worthy of the Hell ranks, relished at the chance to roam the halls they once roamed before they were killed by BJ those many years ago. Naturally, they now obey the Cyberdemon in the 32nd level in place of Hitler and they chose to have pinkies accompany them to replace their beloved canines. The sky floor at the end of 32 is him being warped back to his intended destination from there.
