How's the game/source port compatibility with windows 10?

Recommended Posts

Got a game that's 10-only and don't want to use it exclusively as I heard about heaps of problems with source ports and other games. Plus it's a really hands-off o.s when it comes to using all the windows tweaks we know and love, it's almost like a mac or iphone or something in terms of things that are locked down.

I actually planned on replacing with Win7 but it's suprisingly good, basically 0 problems thus far. No problems with source ports such as PrBoom+ Doom64 EX, ZDaemon, Z/GZDoom, Chocolate Doom or Doom Retro. Just Cause 2 and Serious Sam HD didn't work for me though, but i haven't looked it up so can't confirm it's exclusively a Win10 issue.

There's generally no problem with modern source ports for old games, but there is one thing to be aware of with Win10 and modern-but-pre-Win10 games: memory is limited. Notably, DirectX 9 games can only use up to 4 GB of VRAM. (Apparently Windows 8 has the same issue. Windows 7 doesn't.)

You might think that 4 GB of VRAM should be enough for everyone but there are people out there who just love HD textures enough that this isn't necessarily true.

I've had very little issues with Win10 x64, I've been able to play pretty much everything I want with either no tweaking or very little workaround (Manhunt's broken now though, at least for an AMD user it seems, can't find an app for AMD to lock the game at 60 to prevent script/AI breaking). 8.1 though, was garbage. Some games were being capped to 30 fps for no reason at all despite normally being 60, can confirm they ran fine on 7 prior, and then worked properly again on 10. Plus they removed the start menu, and then brought it back because they realized that was a terrible idea from the get-go.

For anyone having problems with running some of the more finicky games or stuff that ran fine before but decided not to now for whatever reason this is a good website to troubleshoot on: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Home

Some Win9x games that have stood the test of time as far as future-proofing is concerned also still run out of the box even on 10, which is very impressive IMO (Total Annihilation being a recent example I've played). Games that didn't run well even back on the native OS (Blood II anyone?) obviously isn't going to run any better on 10 and will require workarounds.
