Doom for the QNX operating system - pics!

Recommended Posts

Well, you know I have this black PC under my table whilst the white Mac thrones on the table (blah, blah :).
OK. I collect operating systems that can run Doom and so I discovered also QNX. I think it is similar to UNIX, but then again I read that it is based on POSIX (whatever this is). Anyway, you can download this OS from Tucows, it comes to you in a a 28mb file and can be installed under Windows. The installer sets up a 600 mb QNX filesystem on your harddrive and modifies your autoexec.bat a bit, so you can choose your fate on startup. It installs smoothly and vanishes without a trace upon un-installation (I checked this twice).

A webbrowser is pre-installed and other apps can be downloaded using the QNX installer directly from QNX, stuff like a nice IRC app, media player, etc.

And finally, also "Doom". You will have to open the installer and suck it down directly from QNX, the installation process starts automatically.

Here are some screenshots:

It is *FREE SOFTWARE*, does not need any knowledge to install and setting up an internet connection is a snap. So, maybe interesting for surfing without having any fear getting punched down by a virus? Minimum requirements: P200MMX (I tried it on a P200 "no mmx" - no way).

From here you can get it:

uhm, maybe - I donĀ“t know :)

Hey, I just discovered that I do have a title now "Marathon Man". Wow! Is that a custom title or has it to do with my postcount? Well, I love the game "Marathon". Those things are sooo difficult... Anyway - thank you whoever gave it to me :)

Seems pretty interesting, I should have a look at it.

Also, I'm no expert at unix stuff, but I'm pretty sure that unix was a variation of posix...Maybe somehone who know's unix/linux can tell us (me).

hmm....

i'm pretty sure posix is a set of stuffs that an OS must have to be posix compliant. i believe this includes protected distinct memory segments for each program run, a full filesystem level permissions system, among other things. all UNIX, LINUX, and win2k and winXP are among POSIX OSes. note that afaik no earlier windows is posix.

After a quick search on google, yeah, I think you're right.

I think it's unix based though. Not windows, (although, yeah the newer windows may be compliant)

POSIX isnt an Operating System, its the Portable Operating System Standard. In the 80s there were loads of different varieties of Unix around, and they were all slightly different and incompatible with each other. The POSIX standard was created as a "standard Unix". This means that you can write programs for POSIX that should compile and run perfectly on any POSIX compliant OS.

Heh I've never tried it but http://www.freedos.org/ is supposed to be capable of running doom If you want to add another os to your collection. I was thinking of installing so I could run all those cool dos games that don't work with the new versions of windows.

afaik there's a posix layer for win NT.. it was added after some ruling was passed stating all US government or Military computer systems needed to be posix compliant.. so now that NT can be they all use NT, but not the posix layer :)
