Obscure Songs

Recommended Posts

What are some obscure songs you guys have found? I wanted to make a thread about the recent songs I've uncovered from the underrated deluxe versions of Shinedown albums that nobody really cares about and are seemingly iTunes exclusive, and also songs from a band that almost everybody seems to not care or forget about.

Here are the ones I found:

Spoiler

Astronaut - Cryin' Out Loud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i8mkqzN0HE
Astronaut - Negative Re-evaluate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YqEcmf8PQM
Astronaut - Messy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSlMngbGWg4

What do you guys have to share? Tell me, in this very thread, right now.

I would consider most of Garrett Williamson's music obscure. His vocals may be lacking in my opinion but everything else about his music is amazing.

He has a few albums on iTunes, and if you like this I encourage you to buy them.

Obscure is maybe a bit subjective, but here's some pretty obscure (I think?) songs I like

And just for fun :P

Nah, those are pretty mainstream..

On the other hand this Icelandic death metal album is so rare this cd sold for $2200 on Ebay... the band were handing dead stock out for free at a gig prior to someone posting it on Ebay, oblivious to the fact that bidders would fight so hard to get it. ;P

Here's one that isn't as sort after... dudes later went on to form Sentenced, self released and impossible to find. I tried to bribe someone about $100 to get his copy. :p

Discogs: "Last Sold: Never" :(

Nick Cave and the Dirty Three recorded a creepy variant of the X-Files theme for the album Songs in The Key of X, which was a compilation of popular music that appeared on the show. But they also recorded another one which didn't appear in the playlist, the booklet only containing a message "Nick Cave and the Dirty Three would like you to know that "0" is also a number." And indeed, you had to press Previous while on track 1 to reveal the hidden song.

Also worth noting, this obscure song was supposedly the first collaboration of Cave and Warren Ellis, which continues to this day. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Surprised people actually pay that much for a CD copy. It can be easily bootlegged, and the music itself isn't anything special.

This on the other hand, is the best Death Metal album you've never heard. "Relinquished Souls." A CD copy goes between $150-$550: https://www.discogs.com/Burial-Relinquished-Souls/release/2797442

One of the greatest obscure gems in the genre.

Also, anything from the Disciples of Power. All their physical releases are extremely rare and had a very limited printing run in Canada. Early 1990's. I have a friend who was lucky enough to order a copy of each (five releases total) for $10 a piece through Deathgasm mail order. Lucky bastard. They all go between $100-$350 now individually. He turned $50 into $800.

Here's the rarest one. I've never seen a physical copy anywhere, and I've been looking since 2013: https://www.discogs.com/Disciples-Of-Power-Mechanikill/release/1700486

Very interesting band:

Yeah, it's a really good and atmospheric album but I wouldn't pay that amount, I think might also have something to do with the novelty of coming from Iceland and collectors being collectors.. imagine the amount of care you have to put into it.. and I'm a neanderthal with cds. :p

Great stuff, Netherlands probably has the most underrated 90's death metal scene with so many well hidden gems.. thankfully "Relinquished Souls" got reissued, already own a copy!! ;)

Here's some more obscure Dutch DM recommendations in the same vein if you're interested.

No you don't already own a copy, because I said it's the best Death Metal album you've never heard. And if I say it's true, it must be true you fuckWiTAWwognawfaFWAWNOFAOF###44gyfjcfuft

Good recommendations too. But dude, why don't you join rateyourmusic? You can catalog metal and make lists, share music, write reviews etc. I posted a link over on Doomer Boards if you're curious. You seem like the kind of guy that would enjoy a place like that.

My favorite song from Green Day's popular American Idiot is called Shoplifter. short, upbeat, somewhat humorous song that's a B-side to the American Idiot single, and was thus not actually on the album.

I'm not sure how well known it is, though it's not completely unknown.

I also like this from a virtually unknown band:

Funny thing is, I was in the midst of listening to that album before I clicked on this thread.

I'm always ready for obscure old school death metal. Here's another:

Rush, calm down.. now look at me... look at me... now look at your collection... now multiply it by infinity and you ge.... hehe.

Nah I looked at your list and we have a lot of similarities, but putting Sentenced - "North from Here" ahead of "Shadows of the Past" should be punishable by death, though. ;)

WTF, I wasn't expecting you to post that! XDDDDDDDDDD

That's a brilliant album, btw.. have another Swedeath recommendation..

Paid a bit more to get the original pressing, because the artwork on the reissue is just generic and boring. :P

And some neanderthal osdm never hurt anyone..

^ Fine, just keep it all to yourself then. If your collection is an infinite times better (and larger) than mine, why don't you share it so other people can check it out too? Not because I don't believe you (I do believe you), but because I love death metal and am always looking for more good stuff to hear. If there are hundreds of bands I'm missing out on... well that gets me pretty dang curious and excited. That's why I'm trying to get people to join rateyourmusic, because that website is the best platform for sharing obscure music. And finding new music is fun.

I'll join that site in the next couple days, I love everything from Death Metal to Swing so I'll probably get some great recommendations!

haha nah I'm kidding man.. it was funny when when I was younger though.. in my "metal" circle it felt like your worth was measured by how many cds you had.. not one to back down from a fight basically I was the first to reach 100 cds, then 2 weeks later I sold most of it because it was mostly shit. :p

Ahh yeah, I find CD collecting gets to be way too expensive after a while. Honestly my collection is pretty average, about 50 discs or so. Most of my listening is through mp3. The sound isn't as good, but nobody listens to metal for sound quality anyway. So yeah, I don't have an impressive physical collection at all. But I know some folks over there who have thousands of CDs and vinyl records, which is really insane. Maybe one day I will get there.

Off topic but I don't understand the vinyl comeback craze at all. Like I get that the artwork is larger and looks cooler, but it's so annoying to have to worry about static when playing music. Always making popping noises. Kind of ruins quieter moments in songs, like Black Sabbath - War Pigs for example. "No more war pigs of the poweEEEeeE" *POP* "God has struck the houUUuuu" *POP*

Ugh. Constantly having to clean the vinyl each time. Not to mention it's just inconvenient space wise, and hard to find individual tracks with the needle. But hey, some people really love it. I'll admit it looks badass.

Very intellectual lyrics. This guy made thousands of these songs. I can't stand to listen to 95% of them. Nevertheless, they are obscure!

Its sort of like GG Allin, meets Anal Cunt, meets a guy from the 2000s, with a keyboard; four-track, and a myspace account.
