MeetyourUnmaker Posted December 2, 2016 I mean the marine is pretty similar in design to the marines from the War Against the Chtorr series and that was influenced by Heinlein. 0 Share this post Link to post

You know what else was influenced by Heinlein? The 1979 animated series "Mobile Suit Gundam." 0 Share this post Link to post
JohnnyTheWolf Posted December 2, 2016 I hear id's original plan for Doom was to adapt James Cameron's Aliens, which in turn was heavily inspired by Starship Troopers. 0 Share this post Link to post
ArchangelOfHell Posted December 2, 2016 Possibly to some sc fi degree, also wasnt Starship troopers a novel first? 0 Share this post Link to post

If you ever wondered where armored suits come from, ST is its source. The Halo FPSes also take inspiration from there, too. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 3, 2016 Doom is based on Aliens, and D&D, with some minor inspiration from Star Wars (STAR textures), Evil Dead (chainsaw and boomstick), id's very own Wolfenstein 3D (the chaingun that's not actually a chaingun), etc. But not Starship Troopers, at least not directly. (The indirect inspiration through Aliens is there to some extent.) 0 Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted December 3, 2016 I would be surprised if Total Recall (1990) wasn't an inspiration. 0 Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted December 4, 2016 The Doom novels were supposedly in the spirits of the space drama Starship Troopers. I think that was mentioned on the back cover if I remember correctly. 0 Share this post Link to post
Maes Posted December 4, 2016 Just as far as the "space marine" concept goes, which can be said of countless of other Sci-Fi works since then (don't forget, the Starship Troopers novel came out in the 1950s). For the rest, there's none of the political overtones of the novel, or even an application of the powered armor concept, widely considered pioneered by Heinlein. There miiiiight be a slight hint at a dystopian/corporate/militarized future, what with Doomguy being ordered to shoot on civilians and whatnot, but that's not saying much: most depictions of the future do that, too. Even Robocop. 0 Share this post Link to post
