Gamestar news: Revenant and no outdoor levels

Recommended Posts

Here are some interesting news bits from the german Gamestar magazine:

http://www.gamestar.de/news/pc-spiele/action/9591/

Here is my translation for you:

"During an Activision press event we recently were able to take a look at the newest version of Doom 3, including a fresh pixel beast and a new level. The newcomer monster was equipped with two rocket launchers, attached on it´s shoulders - similar to the Revenant in Doom 1. At our request they confirmed us that the Doom remake will not only contain revised monsters from the first part, but also will provide some new cannon fodder - more precise details weren´t mentioned.
Apart from the level that was presented at the E3, there was shown a new polygon construction*, it´s interior didn´t show any particular innovations, opponents were only spawned in by pressing a key.
With reference to the present development status, there will be no areas which are completely outdoor, but the id Software guys plan to remove the ceiling polygons from time to time, just to ensure that there actually is a sky texture.
To demonstrate the grafical magnificence to the specialist audience, the textures were removed at the touch of a key, and you could see surprisingly few polygons.
It´s still not definitively decided if Nine Inch Nail band leader Reznor will do the music and ambient sound.
The presentation run on a Pentium 4. More details will be reported soon from the QuakeCon."

* Note: "polygon construction" is just a silly transliteration for level ;)

Well, I´m not so happy about the "no outdoor levels" part, but maybe the Gamestar guys just misunderstood something there...

DSM or Flathead: You can close my thread since it's about the same thing and this one's better translated :)
Nice to know the Revenant is coming back!

The lack of COMPLETE outdoor levels doesn't bother me. As long as there are outdoor areas of a level I'm satisfied, besides it's like the old doom =]. I am surprised they still haven't settled on whether Trent will be the one responcible of the music or not. It's kind of puzzling why they are waiting untill the last moment with this decision.

And there's no doubt in my mind the revanent will be one of the coolest 'looking' enemies in doom3.

Sorry, my translation was a bit sloppy in this part (just edited it), they write "Freiluft-Areale", which means outdoor areas. And in the next sentence they are talking about Q1 style sky lights...

But possibly they just mean there will be no entirely outdoor levels, it´s not that clear.

So what you 'think' they mean is that we won't be able to go outside at all in the new doom and that we will only be able to see it through windows and rooms with removed cielings? I guess that is a little disapointing, but on the other hand it would be rally hard to take advantage of shadows in the open, especially if it was bright outside. I guess it's for the best, after all I'd rather have no outdoor areas than have ones that suck.

Oh and BTW, thanks for the translation =]

Yes, at least that´s what the Gamestar article suggests.

On a side note, Gamestar is somewhat hated in the german Quake community for beeing a bit biased and pro-Unreal... when Q3A and UT were released, they wrote a quite retarded review about Q3A (showing that they don´t have a clue with movement and game physics etc.,and have no experience with Q1 and Q2), while praising UT because of it´s many gimmicks. So, maybe they just want to hear that the Unreal2 engine has great outdoor levels and the Doom3 engine don´t...

Oh and BTW, thanks for the translation =]

No problem :)

It shouldn't be bright outside, except for some big lights on the base. Remember, this is Deimos and Phobos, the two moons of Mars. The sun is much too far away to make anything that bright. It may not even cast shadows. Even if they somehow terraformed those two big rocks so that it's safe to go outside without a spacesuit, it would still be very dark.

you are wrong about Deimos and Phobos.. there wont be any level up those 2 moons.. you only battle on mars and hell

From what we've seen, there are outdoor areas. That part previewed in the Legacy Video, the one with the Tentacle Commando thing hissing is outside the installation. You can see a rocky cliff, clouds and even a radar dish.

Ok, so it will be on Mars. It will still be a bit dark there, so shadows won't be too much of a problem.

Oh well, silly me...

Ok, but doesn't that count under the whole 'inside but the cieling has been removed' aspect? you're not actually 'outside' of anything, you can still see walls keeping you inside everywhere you look. The only difference is when you look up you see a sky and some mountains. Then again, I just got done eating a whole pizza while a bit hungover, so I might not be thinking clearly.

Really? I've seen the Legacy video, the one with the interviews with Carmack and Trent Reznor and I never noticed anything like that.

There is no outside. Ever. It's always a set of brushes contained in one big sky-textured brush that engulfs everything. The sky brush is the best way to not draw the sky every single frame when geometry would hide it completely. The engine by default draws that "limbo" so common everytime you hit the noclip cheat. That's the only real "outside".

Wtf ? Didn't Gamestar piss off id last year by taking pictures at the QuakeCon presentation ? I even remember Paul Jaquays saying how the magazine WOULDN'T be invited to their next press event. Odd.

Anyway. In an earlier interview, Jim Dose mentioned something about there being a number of outdoor levels, which is kind of the opposite of what they're saying here. Magazines have a way of misunderstanding things so I wouldn't be suprised if Gamestar is just missing the point here.

Glad to see the Revenant returnn, though.

well this is great. so tell me, how are we supposed to dodge a revenant's missile in such a small area? =P

anyway, the revanant isn't my most favorite character, but it's good to see more old doom in the new doom.

I barely see any FULLY outdoor levels these days.

Yeah, I was thinking the same... Activision probably just made clear, that Doom3 will not have gigantic outdoor missions a la Unreal2.

But some outdoor parts should be there. Just to give the player the feeling that he (or she) is actually moving arround in a real world. A large panorama view outside a window to a Mars valley would do it. Or maybe a part where you ride a train trough a canyon or landscape, while fighting Cacodemons and other floating evil just like in an arcade shooter :)
