Story telling elements Doom can excel at in the next game.

Recommended Posts

Actually writing a phenomenal prequel and sequel story for DOOM 2016 right now that should wrap up all the loose ends and seamlessly blend all games in the series.

Will share with you guys here once I'm done :)

Story is not for DOOM and emotional DOOMGUY!? what is wrong with you people.
some games are better without a story DOOM is one of them.

He has plenty of emotion in Doom 2016. He has complete contempt for the UAC, shows sympathy for the victims, and cares enough about VEGA to back him up. He even shows a more light humored side by giving a toy of him a little fist bump. Here's the thing, Doom Guy's always been a mute, he communicates just fine with body language.

I say, just give me a goddamn story I can feel invested in. Doom '16's story, as I've mentioned in another thread, has too much shit going on and I really can't be bothered to try to piece it all together. Too many elements happening at once and none of them are really properly explained. A new Doom game would do well by keeping things a bit simpler, but while still providing something provocative for the player to chew on. Having this extensive lore about hell and its various layers proved to be far less interesting than I would have thought!

Falling in love doesn't make you a pussy.

I'll take a scene of Doomguy's home and lost family if, and only if, afterward we can wreck the house while sad Robocop music plays.

Some of us need a convoluted narrative to really get off.

DOOMGUY_GODMODE is in 2nd grade bro. That's why he uses GODMODE.

That said...yeah, Doom isn't Uncharted and it really shouldn't be.

ITT: People that want Doom to not be unique and be like all the other games going on now.

I really attribute Doom's 2016 success to the fact that it wasn't like the other games. I'm still playing this bitch and it's likely going to be one of my most played games ever. If it had a movie length worth of cutscenes involved around it, that probably wouldn't be the case.

I loved the Uncharted games. But I played all of them only twice. Same with a lot of other games. There is a reason for that, that Doom has made me realize.

It's not about whether falling in love makes one a "pussy" or whatever, it's about whether the "Doom Slayer" character would make sense with a cliché domestic life. And no. He only exists to kill demons. That's quite explicitly said. He's not a normal human thrust in a survival situation, he's a warrior-angel who has spent an eternity in Hell on a crusade to exterminate evil wherever it spawns. He doesn't even have a name.

On a meta level, this lack of an "antedemonium" backstory fits particularly well: the character exists when the game is run; you run the game when you want to shoot demons, therefore the character exists only to shoot demons. He's not there to give you a cinematic experience. And he doesn't even have a name because he's you. Doom is a power fantasy, you play Doom to feel like a badass who can fight off a literal invasion of demons from Hell.

Besides, if Doom had to be telling a story, it should at least be a good story. "I'm sad because my girlfriend was fridged" is not a good story, it's a painful cliché.

Replace Green Lantern with the Doom Slayer, do you get something more compelling? No.

Can't tell if trolling or completely making my sarcastic point that I made in the first sentence.

Anyways, I hope the next doom game has a story like this.

Doomguy strikes a deal with Samuel Hayden where doomguy swears to no longer interfere with him ever again and in return he gets unlimited booze and hookers and a penthouse on mars. However, one morning one Doomguy is in the middle of entertaining himself, the spiderdemon crashes the party and kills all his hookers and destroys his house.

In a drunken rage doom guy says his first words in the entire series "You killed my wife! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?" From then on he chases the spiderdemon until he ends up back to Samuel Hayden where he says "I've seen you met my wife, spiderdemon and now u will die!"

But then out of no where Marty Stratton comes and uses console commands to kill Samuel Hayden. As Doomguy lies on the floor from the fight, Marty Stratton whispers to him "The season pass is only $80" and the credits start rolling.

The UAC is basically a cult that contains pretty much every member of society, and is super open and honest about their weird cult shit.

I think humans (like, actual non-demon humans) as an enemy would really fuck up a lot of established things in the game. It would present the Doom Slayer as being a real asshole, rather than just an angry man that wants to kill demons. I say leave all the human fighting/dying to the background story and the sidelines of what really makes up Doom: Killing demons. Background story and lore for those that are interested in it can be done with elements that don't get in the way of gameplay, like the codex or optional areas. Having it as a central part of gameplay, throwing in cutscenes where the Doom Marine remembers his family or something, or having some sort of love interest would make me not want to play the game.

Just me though. It's their franchise, they can do whatever they want with it.

It could work. They could be Shotgun and HAR-wielding replacements of the classi Heavy Troopers. Doom 2016 lacked those key hitscanners.

...Although human enemies don't really seem to fit Doom for some reason.

Not really...They felt more like melee guys with a cone attack that just happened to have a shotgun.

The game needed a couple of easily disposable, long-range suppressor enemies. The Hellrazer doesn't really cut it. Hopefully the sequel will introduce a couple of such enemies.

I think the Hellrazer is more fun to fight than the pistol zombies from classic Doom. Both enemies have to be made somewhat of a priority since they can hit you instantly from afar, but the Hellrazer's beam can be seen and dodged. Plus they sweep the beam, so you have to jump over it sometimes. Compare that to the pistol zombie which just has difficult to predict hitscan shots that make you either shoot it ASAP or run in zig zags and hope it misses, or just take cover.

I feel like it was a mistake to make DoomGuy some immortal superhero, but story is so inconsequential in the series, I guess it's not a big deal...

I've seen it as the Possessed Soldier being sort of the equivalent of Pistol Guy, Possessed Security the Shotgun Guy, and Hell Razor just kind of the Chaingun Commando.

After all the shit he's seen and done, it's the only story that makes sense.

People seem to be missing the point on what I am saying, I am not saying have doom turn into uncharted with a shit ton of cutscenes and gameplay that just turns into a film no, what I am saying is ID should use what worked with how doom guy uses his actions as vessels for his emotions.

Or if possible for those that want it they could have interactions in the environment that if you pick it up it has a small scene of a story. Like what I identified. (or any other one you can come up with use your imagination.)

Or at the very least use the environment to tell a story. like in the original doom when we first fought a cyber demon and before we fought it we just saw dead hell knights every were.
