ukiro Posted January 20, 2017 Another variation of one of the symbols (on rusty metal instead of marble) can be seen here: 3 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted January 20, 2017 Avoozl said:Eh, it's not really a Satanic symbol, it's the Baphomet head which is occult/pagan. This goat head is a lot more goaty and less demony, but you will find clearly satanic variants in many Doom textures, and it's especially prominent in Doom 64. (There are quite a few in Hexen II textures too, which I mention in passing because they're often used in Doom wads.) 0 Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted January 20, 2017 Cool stuff. But something bothers me about that tiny horizontal line above the eyes. Almost looks like some kind of a glitchy line. I wonder what other people will say about it. 0 Share this post Link to post

This is from one of the marble sets (I always wanted a darker green marble so I made one): (circles are not round here due to DOOMs pixel aspect ratio. They're perfectly round in-game.) A bit of thread resurrection but damn these look good and I can't wait for the release. They will fit nicely in with my hellscapes 6 Share this post Link to post

Halfblind Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) I know that @Agent Spork made a few texture edits for Ultimate Simplicity. @kristus is also very involved in making his own textures for his projects especially for Phobos the Age. I have also been working on a minimalistic texture pack of my own. https://imgur.com/a/ylrDe 0 Share this post Link to post
Phade102 Posted May 24, 2018 BigBrik games, who made the adventures of square make their own textures i'd say. 0 Share this post Link to post

Wereknight Posted May 25, 2018 You wouldn't believe I making textures, sprites, levels and SO SHITTY AS HELL MIDIS I REGRET ABOUT that I seem to be a miracle. That was a joke. But, seriously, I do all that stuff for real. 1 Share this post Link to post

Just noticed that the forum software put a horizontal blue line between the 16-month gap between the 2 posts. I guess that's a thing that the software does? 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted May 26, 2018 That line is between now and the last time you read this thread, denoting where to read from. :) Spoiler 0 Share this post Link to post
DynamiteKaitorn Posted May 26, 2018 I also use my own textures for my wads. Also I never realised how far I have come from episode 0. Episode 0: Episode 1: Episode 2: EPISODE 3 Spoiler And some one-offs: 2 Share this post Link to post
Bridgeburner56 Posted May 27, 2018 What programs do people just for making their textures? I think this is something that I could get into. Slowly learning how to use slade3 which is good for texture management and working with existing assets but it doesn't seem to be good for making them from scratch 0 Share this post Link to post
ukiro Posted May 27, 2018 In general I don't recommend the apps geared towards 'pixel art' unless you're going for an aesthetic that is pre-doom, but some people are making really nice stuff in that style (like Fuzzball, recently). And it's VERY useful to learn the fundamental principles of shading and how to give the illusion of different types of surfaces and materials from the ground up this way rather than starting with photo based sources. When the pixel art craft started to die out in the late 90's we had some of the worst game art in the history of gaming, because you got kids coming in without that background that just threw 90 photoshop filters at blurry source materials. Learn the basics! That said, I do almost everything in Photoshop: A few smaller things are done in illustrator but that's rare. This would be my #1 recommendation but it's a very complex piece of software. I've had a license since 1996 and I still learn new tricks every week. For maximum authenticity you could use some sort of deluxepaint clone or derivative but I think it's hard to justify these days. If you're good at 3D it could make sense to model some geometry and render that out to Photoshop. I have dabbled very briefly in Quixel but decided against buying it for now. Unlike Photoshop Gimp is free but arguably not quite with the same breadth of tools. Some people seem to like paint.net but it's much simpler (which I guess can be part of the allure). 2 Share this post Link to post

I was lucky actually to get my CS3 copy for free from a friend. Someone recommended paint.net to me but when I tried to download it, it had downloaded a bunch of other software that I did not want along with it. That is really frustrating to me. 0 Share this post Link to post
Bridgeburner56 Posted May 28, 2018 Maybe I'll give GIMP a go. I'm definitely not at the point where I am willing to pay for Photoshop but that may change. 0 Share this post Link to post
RaphaelMode Posted May 28, 2018 Custom textures are the way to make your map truly unique. That is, they may make your map unique. Reverie has some custom textures that are nothing short of amazing in their utter unremarkability. 2 Share this post Link to post
