Volumetric light in GZDoom?

Recommended Posts

I've never seen actual lighting like that WADs before, but it can be set with the illusion of a flat that looks like light is shedding on it. BTSX E2 map01 does it.

In Boom or Doom-in-Hexen or UDMF, you could use transfer brightness to make the ceiling of a bright sector be dark like the rest of the room. That would look like the picture except there would be no beams of light.

The engine itself does not support volumetric light, it simply doesn't mix with how Doom levels are being constructed, but with some effort it is possible to do some quite nice looking effects, but it's certainly a lot of work.

The effect is usually faked by using a lot of translucent lines with a beam texture. It's not a very efficient way to do it, but it kinda works.

See this for more details.

Brutal doom 64 does that just use custom mid textures for the light beams and custom flats for the shadows on the floor or make sectors with custom brightness for the shadows on the floor.
