Best Half-Life mods?

Recommended Posts

What are some of the best fan-made creations you have played? I have been lmao at some of the Crack-Life/Jamie's Mod clones but I was thinking of something a little more focused on serious campaign. I am planning on getting Gunman Chronicles sooner or later.

I know this might seem a bit like shit-posting, but I've seen this Half-Life mod where you get to "play" as a vending-machine many years ago and it cracked me up:

Those were my favorites. I played quite a few half-life mods, but Heart of Evil and the Half-Quakes were just amazingly done. Heart of Evil for it's mirroring of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, while going completely ridiculous and throwing everything out the window and shitloads of zombies. Half-Quake for it's amazing minimalist approach, sadistic sense of humor, and amazing soundtrack.

TWHL Tower is a very interesting mod. It's a mostly puzzle oriented mod where you progress to the top of a tower, and every floor is designed by someone different. Some of the floors are a bit iffy, but most are really good. The stealth segment set in a Japanese apartment is a particular standout.

Headcrab Frenzy is an arcade oriented mod that's exponentially more fun than it would sound if I were to describe it. It's available for free on Steam, which is more than I can say for Ricochet.

I know this discussion is about Half-Life 1, but I'll throw out Mission Improbable for Half-Life 2. It's worth playing just to see Stephen Hawking with a rocket launcher. Top quality design overall.

The Specialist was killed by role players...

The Specialists is still fun against bots. I'm also gonna put my name in the Sweet Half-Life hat, and Poke646 is a pretty entertaining single-player TC.
