Of course, I can always dig out an old conversation with quotes, but it's clumsy. If I go to my profile right now, I can see the 'Display Name History' icon right next to my name. I'm wondering if you can see that as well. 1 Share this post Link to post
Nine Inch Heels Posted March 15, 2017 6 minutes ago, dew said: Well, instead of creating an entire new section that would serve as "more private status updates", it would make more sense to enable status updates that won't appear on the main page. That way just your followers or profile spelunkers would know about it. I think this is a good idea. Perhaps having a button that needs to be switched to "public", and generally having the default set to "followers only" might already do the trick. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted March 15, 2017 Personally I'm very glad blogs are gone and don't want them to come back. Too much private information not worth sharing. 0 Share this post Link to post
baja blast rd. Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) Minor bug report: using the scroll wheel to move up and down a page doesn't seem to work, at least not for me. Doesn't seem to be DW-specific. Edited March 15, 2017 by rdwpa 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted March 15, 2017 TimeOfDeath said: Test posting with images and javascript disabled. Cool, thanks! Just in case someone tried this and figured I was just being a sarcastic jerk, the new forum is actually very usable without javascript (even more so than the old forum) as long as you haven't enabled javascript and loaded a page. Apparently something gets added to your cookies on your first visit with enabled javascript, and it makes some features (like posting) impossible after you disable javascript. But if you delete your cookies and then disable javascript and log back in, the features are working again (even with disabled javascript). I know nobody cares about this but I think it's awesome. 4 Share this post Link to post
bioshockfan90 Posted March 15, 2017 Just noticed that notifications neatly slide onto the screen if you get one while browsing. Good stuff. Yeah, I'm fine with blogs being gone too. Not that huge a loss. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted March 15, 2017 Thank you Linguica for keeping this site going and making necessary upgrades. Some pixels are not what I'm used to which makes you literally the worst person since Genghis Khan, but apart from that you're a pretty cool guy. 5 Share this post Link to post
lupinx-Kassman Posted March 15, 2017 Truly my only concern was that we'd no longer get Ninja Doom updates, but now that I hear the hosted pages are coming back in some form everything is 👌 0 Share this post Link to post

SaladBadger Posted March 15, 2017 I haven't noticed any real problems so far, but I do have a few questions: 1: What is the ideal size for an avatar so it doesn't look terrible? My old av was upscaled to 192x192, but the actual size seems to be much smaller than that. This one (100x100) still looks a little grainy. (though Xaser was looking into making that nicer?). Also shrinking the text size for usernames some might be nice so long ones don't get cut off. maybe I should just get a shorter and less stupid username though. 2: Is invisible mode no longer a thing? Not that it matters much, I just sort of noticed an absence of it looking through the settings. and one low priority question: 3: Did anyone bother to archive the old avatars and title images? Its really a minor thing, but those images have been around for so long, man... 0 Share this post Link to post
Grain of Salt Posted March 15, 2017 The new forum features are fun and strange. I'm having fun, in a strange way. 5 Share this post Link to post

If you look at the page code (with "inspect element" or similar feature), you see this: <img itemprop="image" alt="InsanityBringer" src="<snip>" style="width: 90px; height: 90px;"> So 90x90 is what you want if you don't want any rescaling to happen to the image. 1 Share this post Link to post

Jaxxoon R Posted March 15, 2017 The new layout feels a lot more cozy than the old one, and even though I have no idea what all the buttons it's pretty neat that they're all there. Also, much thanks to Linguica for fixing the thing, now forgetful dummies like me can return to haunt the living. 0 Share this post Link to post

Zahid Posted March 15, 2017 this new layout leaves me with some concerns... my major question is that for years my doom playing was going strictly like this,i open idgames archive click on "Random file" until i found something to play...How to find random wads to play now? -now there is a max attachments limit of 4.88 mb which i already consumed 22% what does it mean ? should demo posting here at forums would be kept limited from now on? -Are there new FAQ or Posting Guidelines Too If yes, where to find those? 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted March 15, 2017 All the weird little unicode boxes have finally loaded their glyphs from awesomefonts.com or wherever and it looks a lot better now. 0 Share this post Link to post
SaladBadger Posted March 15, 2017 Hmm, yeah. 90x90 is about the best it seems. The images look to invariably be converted to JPEGs, which eats the quality a bit, but then again I'm not doing many favors for the quality by cropping a 1080p image to 90x90. heh With regards to the old images... yeah, I guess I liked the fish, as well as a lot of the other avatars from long ago. Also the stranger images that appeared in the header on occasion. I did remember to grab the rock with the animated eye, though, and given the impse test ling did, if he ever wanted to restore all the old headers I guess it would be possible to keep that. 0 Share this post Link to post
LexiMax Posted March 15, 2017 (edited) The only problem I have with the new forum software is that it seems like some pages take a noticeable amount of time to start loading,. Reloading this page takes anywhere from one and a half to four seconds just to get a reply from the server. I wonder if there is any caching that can be enabled that can help with page response times. Because as soon as the page actually begins loading, it's lightning fast. 1 Share this post Link to post

I wonder if there is any caching that can be enabled that can help with page response times. Because as soon as the page actually begins loading, it's lightning fast. The problem is that the server is SEVERELY overloaded. Like I said, I didn't realize just how much of a CPU hog this software is. For comparison: Old server load: 0.2 at peak times New server load: 2 or 3, with spikes up to 10 or more (!!!) The software doesn't cache NEARLY as much as I was expecting. On the back end there are like 5 different caching methods you can choose from (memcached, redis, APC, etc) and it talks about speeding things up a lot. But as far as I can tell, these are the only things that actually get cached: Pages that guests are viewing (it will cache the whole page for 60 seconds, I believe) Some various stuff about forum settings There is no 3 To contrast, the old forum obviously had no built in caching functionality (since it was a piece of crap from 2002), but I had hacked in stuff to make it cache in a big memcached blob the html content of EVERY POST and EVERY THREAD it was serving up. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zed Posted March 15, 2017 I think my first reaction was a little unfair, this is actually looking good. I didn't expect this sudden change, so I guess I was like "oh no, this is gonna suck", but I must say I am pleasantly surprised. The only thing I do miss is Post Hell. Congratulations Ling, this has been a great accomplishment. Thanks for keeping this forum alive. 0 Share this post Link to post

I am inclined to think that a lot of this CPU stress is due to all the things people can do with their profiles now, at least that'd maybe explain the spikes to some extent. I wouldn't be surprised if these spikes would more or less disappear at some point in time. Ten to fifteen times the CPU usage is quite a quota however. Thank you for keeping us updated and providing interesting information. Eventhough there may still be some kinks to iron out, I enjoy this place so much more than before. Threads and people seem a lot less "isolated" to me, and that is a great accomplishment. Thank you for all this and then some @Linguica. <3 0 Share this post Link to post
