Oh you can use any OpenID provider? I admit I wasn't on the login page for long on the day of the software switch but I don't remember seeing OpenID, only Facebook, Twitter, Google, Steam. Perhaps that's changed in the last six days but I don't feel like logging out just to check :) 44 minutes ago, GooberMan said: If you're worried that the external authenticators in use here are vulnerable Not sure if this is specifically in response to my previous post, but if so, I think you misread it. I explicitly agreed with others that they are most likely secure, because it's very much in the companies' business interests that they are. 44 minutes ago, GooberMan said: Maybe checking if your accounts have been pwned every now and then is a good idea. No I have not changed my Doomworld password since the forum software switch. 30 minutes ago, Dragonfly said: In some ways it is quite personal to me. Linguica Posted March 20, 2017 No, DW doesn't use OpenID to log in, as far as I know. Apparently the software had OpenID support in the previous (3.x) version, but decided to remove it for whatever reason. I don't know if the existing third party logins are through OAuth or OpenID or what the difference really is. (I think the Steam one is OpenID actually.) Also your passwords are somewhat more secure once you log in to the new software as the passwords get re-hashed using 8192 rounds instead of just 512 rounds. 0 Share this post Link to post

I use their search sometimes, but I don't register a name to associate with the data I can't prevent them collecting as I browse the web. Or you can do the genius solution my colleague has come up with. Instead of trying to limit the information Google tracks on you, obscure it by providing far too much! He has set up a script that searches for a completely random string of two unconnected words once every couple of hours, and then loads the cached version of a random hit from the first page. He's been doing it for years. All the benefits of a Google account with absolutely none of the profiling! 2 Share this post Link to post
Da Werecat Posted March 20, 2017 I hope his script has some exceptions, like "make bomb" or something! 0 Share this post Link to post

Haha, like that adblock extension that clicks on ads, they had to ban it because it was undermining the business model. 0 Share this post Link to post

LuciferSam86 Posted March 21, 2017 Actually I like the new forum, and finally is mobile friendly, which is nice :) I don't miss post hell since in the last period it was full of "please delete this thread" and not really fun derailed threads. It was creepily funny the "multicore doom" guy, but nothing special. 1 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted March 21, 2017 (edited) Are there any specific avatars that are annoying you? You could always use a plugin and write a userscript or something similar to try and stop gif-based avatars displaying. Thing is, most of the animated avatars are 'classy', not too animated or annoying. There's a couple that are a bit annoying, sure, but it's easy to ignore. The only issue I'd be aware of is detecting if a GIF is animated or not. A lazy solution: $('.ipsUserPhoto img[src$=".gif"]').remove(); Some people have made solutions for detecting animated gifs specifically, if you really are that bothered about it.https://gist.github.com/lakenen/3012623 0 Share this post Link to post

DooM_RO Posted March 22, 2017 @Linguica Would it be possible to link files from the Downloads section to the user who created them? 0 Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted March 22, 2017 5 minutes ago, DooM_RO said: @Linguica Would it be possible to link files from the Downloads section to the user who created them? This is a nice idea, but the idgames submission process doesn't require a Doomworld account. What's more, people can submit using different names and different email addresses than they use here. I'm not sure there'd be any way to automate the process, and manually linking them seems rather time consuming. It's a cool idea, giving more access to map authors is always a good thing, but I'm just not sure how it might work in practice. 0 Share this post Link to post
Revenant100 Posted March 22, 2017 58 minutes ago, Bauul said: I'm not sure there'd be any way to automate the process, and manually linking them seems rather time consuming. There's a simple and easy way this process can be handled: first-come, first-served. Allow me to begin: I hereby claim everything in all megawads sections. 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted March 22, 2017 It could be a feature for all future uploads. Sure, all the past wads and mods won't be assigned to a user, but all future uploads could be automatically assigned to the user who uploaded them, IF they are logged in? Would be pretty nice to see a downloads section in a user's profile, instead of these "Here's my WADList" status updates that very quickly get buried. :) 1 Share this post Link to post
DooM_RO Posted March 22, 2017 (edited) Another cool feature would be to something that mentions how many times a user has been credited in the credits section. For example, if I click the profile of a musician, there should be a section where it says in which WADs they have been credited. If I know the musician and like his music, this could be a way to discover more of his work and also give me another reason to download the WAD. 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted March 22, 2017 That would be a pretty awesome feature to have. I imagine it would be very difficult to implement initially and might be quite taxing on Linguica / anyone else involved in getting that to work, but it would be really cool to see it happen. I'm curious, I wonder how many times this has been said: "Thanks to id Software for Doom / Doom 2", or "Randi Heit for ZDoom" etc. :P 0 Share this post Link to post

I mean when you access a user's profile, it scans the entire Downloads text file database for instances of his their name. 0 Share this post Link to post
RjY Posted March 22, 2017 Since you now have to upload with a valid email address, this could be crossreferenced with the email address you provided when registering on the forums. 1 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted March 22, 2017 Possibly, but Linguica's already having to do their best to reduce how much strain the new software is placing on the server. Polling the entirety of the idgames database every time someone's profile is viewed wouldn't be an option. It would need to be pre-generated and updated automatically when new files are uploaded. 1 Share this post Link to post
