Quake Mods

Recommended Posts

So I randomly started playing Quake again today for no reason and I am getting into it. I have had it installed on this PC for awhile now and I had forgot about some of the mods I had installed for it.  I have plenty of Source Ports installed so I think I am good in that regard. Here are the following mods I have that are note worthy.

-In the Shadows

-After Shock

-Nehahra

-Arcane Dimensions

-QdQstats

-Episode 5: Dimension of the past

Any suggestions for any other mods I should try out? I am willing to install one of the other Quakes if someone has a good idea for a mod for me to play. I really feel like recording some demos (Like 100% something) for whatever reason. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I guess this is related but a mod I truly miss playing is Gloom for Quake 2. That mod was done so well and I loved it. I am not sure if anybody still plays it but I doubt there are many people that still play it. It was so fun to play and I really think it is an underrated mod (I believe it can be turned into a commercial game). I loved saving my frags up to become a Mech and just wrecking shit.

Anyone who hasn't seem Gloom here is a Youtube link to a gameplay video:

Not all of them include mods, but here are some level packs /episodes I have fond memories of:

- Insomnia

- Rapture

- Rubicon 2

- Soul of Evil

- Operation Urth Magik

Zerstörer - Testament of the Destroyer made quite an impression on me back when I was a teenager. I strongly recommend it.

I too was impressed back in the day. But when I re-played it recently I found that it didn't age well. It was much more intense in my memory, and now I noticed many flaws like blocky, simplistic design and awkward cutscenes. The macabre and dark atmosphere is still great though.

I can recommend this one for fans of Zerstörer: Func Map Jam 3 - Zerstörer theme https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/func_mapjam3.html

Travail:http://quakeone.com/travail/, mappack with long maps, a lot of exploration, with a soundtrack that suits it very well, dark atmosphere.

Nehahra:https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/nehahra.html, a classic, considered the father of Quake mods, a great mod.

Malice:http://www.quaketerminus.com/mods/malice.zip, TC that's pretty good, with inventory items that you can use, badass guns, tough levels that can be confusing, but still worth checking out.

Func Map Jam 2 for the sheer beauty of the levels. The first level (alphabetically) is unfinished and might spoil the first impression, so I'd advice starting with another one.

The recent Retro Jam 6 is also impressive, both by quality and quantity of maps.

As far as big ambitious works go, Rubicon Rumble Pack deserves attention - big (and I mean big) detailed maps in a grimy industrial setting.

True, when I played it back in 2008 I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting myself into and the ending really surprised me. While watching someone play through it all on YT back in 2013 I wasn't nearly as blown away but it still has a uniquely dark atmosphere and setting that proved to be very inspiring to me and such have conceptualized a loosely inspired fan fiction based on the mod.

As for Quake, I can recommend The Cassandra Calamity and almost everything that was listed on the old Team Shambler website for Quake 1 single player levels as it was my strong head start into the Q1 SP scene (I still remember when this site closed too, goddamn that was a long time ago). I really should give Quaddicted a look, been years since I've sat down with Q1 addons.
