A gem many people have long forgotten, complete with an indepth review:

For me it's a timeless classic and it was one of the first dedicated slaughter wads I have downloaded.

Here's something non-slaughtery:

Ironically enough, the map has been used and "reskinned" to serve as chillax m21's opening. It's got quite a classic feel to it, and plays rather nice. Give it a shot. Well, on second thoughts, it does have some slaughtery touches to it, but I think it's sufferable even if you don't like slaughter that much.

Doom: Damnation. Superb vanilla remake of Doom 1 (but no E4). Badass soundtrack, too.

I wrote an in-depth review of it in the 525th Chronicles. (does anyone remember those?)

Definitely espv2.wad

never really hear much about it on the forums but it's one of my all time favourites and the exploration and combat is just perfect

Where can I find it?

Mars War , a very old and classic megawad made by Nathan Lineback.

Mars Wardon't have really challenging or really good maps but when I played it , I feel a special atmosphere because the mapper used Modules tracks instead of Midis (only if you play on Zdoom or an other new-school port)  , the maps have a rather more amateur style with a certain charm and a lot of originality.

Phmlspd pleasantly surprised me.  It was interesting to play maps I was already well familiar with from Chillax but seeing them in an actual "playable" state.
