What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

Been playing through Modern Warfare 2 a second time before hanging it up, taking lots of screenshots. Finished a Zerg mission in StarCraft tonight and absolutely rekt the Terran with my armies of Zerglings and Mutalisks. Finished Doom II in BFG Edition and started on No Rest for the Living.

Picked up Get Even in the Steam sale. I don't know what I was expecting, but it's probably the closest thing to a Condemned sequel we're going to get.

Tried out Overwatch since it's free to try for a few days right now, safe to say Pharah is my character of choice, as the Soldier was in TF2.

Also my favourite, from the little time that I played Overwatch.

And if you want to get a guaranteed play of the game, there is Bastion (get in turret mode and camp in a secret spot, LOL). It is always fun seeing the reaction of my friends, when this works.

Started out the day playing some games with my son, who's too young to actually play, so he sits on my lap and watches.

I played a bit into Square when he informed me "no daddy, want play Dooooooom". I was also instructed to "find yeyyow key daddy".

He did finally get bored of Doom so I dug through my games folder and gave Organ Trail a whack. This game is hilarious. I picked it up a long while ago but never got around to playing it.

Oregon Trail and Organ Trail are amazing games, imo.

Yeah, Oregon Trail was one of my earliest gaming experiences. I never did get past that rafting segment at the end, though.

Playing some Crystal Caves at the moment. There's something really fun about the simplicity of those old "jump-n-shoot" platformers that hasn't carried over into newer games, unless I've been missing out on something.

I'm starting to get into Kingdom Come Deliverance I kickstarted years back. Almost forgot I did.

I only completed the starting segment which is reasonably good. The graphics, aesthetics and voicing is all to my liking. I really hope I didn't miss important combat practice because I suck at it.

There is a scene where you're suppose to run away from an enemy soldier. I turned around and said "I played a million hours of Warband, you don't know who you are messing with!" and got slaughtered. About 30 retries I gave up and followed the game's instructions. I just hope there will be more training available.

Messing with the depressingly bad N64 emulation to go through Duke Nukem 64 (since you apparently need $80 lying around to even get a console, that's not counting the games, especially the popular ones, which are near or well full price as they were back in the day) and came across this shocking scene:

The other women in peril are reasonably edited, even sometimes better emphasizing their features, whereas the one woman you can't save is graphically split apart with a broken sticking out spine, which is way more explicit than anything on the PC version, even the unused impaled woman wasn't this gruesome. Nintendo wanted a porn shop to be replaced by a gun store (because that's better I guess and this is coming from a gun lover), but I wonder if this was the graphics artist just seeing what they could get away with in retaliation for the censorship. Don't praise women, mutilate their body! The Nintendo way!

Not to steal/hijack/go off on a tangent, but it seems likes Nintendo can do no wrong these days, regardless of what they do. Artificial scarcity of products, archaic business practices, repetitive games or clones of the same games, etc etc.  ::shrugs:: What can you do, I guess?

Been awhile since I've played Hexen. I like it, but I prefer Heretic. It's definitely a bit more ambitious than Heretic, and the graphics are pretty amazing for the Doom engine, but the hub format doesn't really seem to suit this style of gameplay that well. Somehow, the areas just feel a bit less connected to one another, even though the whole point was to design grand, interwoven environments with adventure game elements.

While I was playing through the second hub, the elevator door in the temple become irrevocably jammed, which resulted in my having to noclip my way in and out of the location.

Today I'm tried to play Nier: Automata. I have a new laptop but I managed to play the game only 5 minutes. Then game crashed.

Nintendo has always had people who think they can do no wrong. But it seems that since the Wii came out that particular sentiment is the predominant line of thinking. It's honestly quite frustrating especially as a longtime Metroid fan.

I just wish Nintendo didn't jump on the DLC train, but they have also been making their games pitifully easy these days, for the most part there's like zero challenge at all.

After two failed attempts at getting into Diablo, I tried again, and apparently I succeeded. I finally managed to get the hang of it, and I'm having fun! The combat still pisses me off a little, but then again, I've always thought that the combat in RPGs is utter garbage. It makes me feel like I don't have enough control over my character.

Despite me not liking the combat all that much, the sound design and the overall atmosphere are just wonderful (especially in the catacombs, where I'm currently in). The voice acting might be some of the best I've heard on a game as well, giving each of the characters a distinct feeling.

It might run at a low resolution, but it still looks really good, actually. The sprites and the animations are top notch.

If there's something to crtiticize IMO, it's the procedurally generated levels. I rather have 10 levels that are well designed than 30 that look all the same. Sure, you have more replayability value, but it's still just a bunch of mazes.

The randomization works best in a game like this since it's all indoors, but Diablo II is largely outdoors so they nerfed the randomization elements.

In which way did they nerf them?

Large outdoors will say hi when you'll hit the lvl 13 dungeon.

There's chunks of terrain that get rearranged upon loading, like what Shadow Warrior 2 does, so it's not as unpredictable each time you play. Diablo 1 randomizes entire structures, room shapes and setpieces, but it can lead the algorithm doing weird shit like long hallways that lead nowhere.

About halfway through the Caves on Nightmare difficulty with the Belzebub mod for Diablo, continuing my hard mode run with Die Anna on Carmageddon with the C95 pack, started Turok 2: Seeds of Evil on hard and finished the first level, recently finished Vergil's Downfall for DmC on Nephilim difficulty.

I'm done with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and the DLCs on Hard difficulty. I've started runs on the Very Hard and Revengeance difficulties. I am considering a fresh start Very Hard run since Revengeance is basically equivalent to the Heaven or Hell difficulty from DMC (basically everything, including you, dies in one hit).

I have to say, while MGR:R isn't near DMC4's complexity or Ninja Gaiden's difficulty, it's probably the closest modern equivalent to a game like God Hand. I really hope God Hand gets a remaster/release on PC and MGR:R gets a sequel. Close-camera action games aren't too common as far as I know. Also, it was released in the same year as DmC: Devil May Cry, but for the simple fact that MGR:R has a fairly unique combat system that is well-executed, I find this game to be far superior to DmC.

The music and bosses are godlike. The weapons are decently balanced (except for end-game gear), and it's heavily focused on blocking and parrying rather than dodging. The only flaws are that it's too short and the camera is very questionable.

Some footage : First Boss Awesomeness

Dicking around in Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, I kind of want to see this game redone in a 2.5D engine.

So I finished Diablo. I have mixed feelings with it...

For starters, the balancing can be horrible at times. The Butcher was a pain, but none of the other bosses really got to that level. I mean, Diablo himself is a joke. I literally could not believe it was the final boss of the game... Aside from that, I don't know if I was incredibly unlucky with the level generation or what, but I got obliterated in one of the hell levels, populated by these knights. I died over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. Then the next level was insanely easy in comparison.

I also played a bit of Hellfire. Got to the end of the Nest dungeon and... got bored of trying to deal with The Defiler. I was using a barbarian, and I was burning through my potions like they were nothing. I had to get back to town several times, I even bought a fucking bow, but my patience eventually ran out and I uninstalled the game.

I really don't get why some RPG devs think it's a good idea to make bosses with super high health pools, or just batshit hard bosses in general. I don't mind getting my ass kicked in something like Doom because more often than not dying is entirely my fault, but here? What am I supposed to do with a melee-focused character? And the fact that the guy misses a lot of the time even with a giant beast two feet in front of him doesn't help either. Also, hit chance seems to be misleading. I had "100% to hit" in my stats and I swear the guy would still miss. Summoner is still my favorite RPG to this day, partially because the only thing you need to beat it is some common sense, although I guess I can understand some people wanting a bigger challenge...

Blood Dragon is one of the gems of that generation. If you're in the mood for some 2.5D in the same vein might I recommend Matt Hazard Bloodbath & Beyond?

Diablo

I got the same experience in Diablo II with Duriel, who was like The Butcher x1000, otherwise none of the other bosses gave me much trouble. Also if you think the game's lopsided, try the Sorcerer class, invest solely in magic attribute, stock up your inventory with mana potions and learn mana shield, and you will be an unstoppable killing machine. If you want even more power then abuse the Black Death zombie (yellow zombies) to permanently remove base hit points past a point where you can no longer be stunned.

I noticed the dungeon levels don't necessarily scale according to the player, you can end up with wildly different monster configurations that can sometimes be way too difficult. I found it quite hard to go through an entire game without having to start a new game at some point because later levels were kicking my ass too hard. You keep whatever's in your inventory and your character level and stats, but can have an easier time and potentially gain better equipment to get back up to where you were, hopefully this time with an improved edge.

The unique factors of Diablo 1 is you can save whenever, dying is permanent (which effectively turns the game into a rogue-like if you don't save or you don't use load), floors do not re-populate so you can't farm experience or drops, and not all quests will be available on any one game, resulting in drastically different experiences.

Hellfire is not good, it wasn't made by Blizzard but by Sierra, it also reintroduces bugs that Blizzard patched out with their 1.09 update (Hellfire's 1.01 patch reverts some of Blizzard's changes while fixing Hellfire's own problems). If you absolutely must use the expansion then The Hell mod will vastly improve upon it, though I haven't played it in 5 years. If you want some Diablo II flavor in your Diablo 1, the HD mod Belzebub is worth a shot, even though it is a beta. I can't guarantee it's always the most balanced experience though, at least with my experience on Nightmare difficulty so far.

That seems well balanced lol... I might try it someday.

I don't know if I should play Diablo 2, considering my experiences with the first game. I've heard that it's more fun overall, though. What do you think?
